God is Holy

Consider God’s holiness. Meditate.

Each of these living beings had six wings, and their wings were covered all over with eyes, inside and out. Day after day and night after night they keep on saying, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty--the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come." Whenever the living beings give glory and honor and thanks to the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever), the twenty-four elders fall down and worship the one sitting on the throne (the one who lives forever and ever). And they lay their crowns before the throne and say, "You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased." Revelation 4:8-11

There is one song—Holy Holy Holy that I learned in Junior Choir growing up under the direction of Betty Rae Rotha that I still always sing the alto part. It was written by Reginald Heber (1783–1826).

“HOLY, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty! / Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee; / Holy, holy, holy merciful and mighty, / God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!”

God is pure.
God is Holy.
God is holy. There is no doubt about it. He even declares Himself to be holy—pure and blameless. He wants His followers to know that He is holy and expects them to be holy also.

Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:2

I personally am in awe of God, because of His holiness. Consider His purity. Can we even come near Him?

No one is holy like the LORD! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. 1 Samuel 2:2

That holiness of God the Father—as well as that of the Son and the Holy Spirit—is precisely why Jesus came to earth. In order for us to one day stand before God and “be holy” we must have a pure and perfect sacrifice for our sin. Jesus provided that sacrifice. Himself. Since He was perfect, He could be a sacrifice for our sin.

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. 1 Peter 1:18-20

But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 1 Peter 1:15, Leviticus 11:44-45

Be holy. It is a big order. It is only possible through the mercy and love of the Lord God. We can’t possibly do it on our own. The Holy Heavenly Father, Our God, has a plan. Part of that plan has been fulfilled when Jesus died on the cross for our sin. Jesus said, It is finished. But we still must submit our will to God, to believe in Jesus as our own personal savior. It won’t happen automatically and just being “good” won’t make us perfect enough to get into Heaven. We must believe, obediently confess our sin, and call on the name of Jesus.

Prayer ~ Holy God, I live as your obedient child. Help me not to slip back into my old ways of living to satisfy my own desires. I didn't know any better then. But now I must be holy in everything I do, just as You, God, who chose me, are holy. From 1 Peter 1:14-15

Verse of Salvation ~ So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 1 Peter 1:13
