Are You Hiding Like David?

Prayer – Lord, show me Your truths in Your scripture today. You keep me alive…and I praise You for all that You have done for me—rescuing me from my troubles and my enemies.

A psalm of David, regarding the time the Ziphites came and said to Saul, "We know where David is hiding."

Come with great power, O God, and rescue me! Defend me with your might. Listen to my prayer, O God. Pay attention to my plea. For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive! May the evil plans of my enemies be turned against them. Do as you promised and put an end to them. I will sacrifice a voluntary offering to you; I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good. For you have rescued me from my troubles and helped me to triumph over my enemies. Psalm 54:1-7

Meditate. Consider God’s guidance in scripture. Read God’s word and listen to what He is saying.

Leaves on my Mountain Tulip tree
Fall is here!
Can you believe it? This is the last day of September! Are you praising the Lord for the beautiful fall weather? I am! I love the crisp air and the changing colors of the leaves!

Are you hiding like David? David was hiding from his enemies who were plotting to kill him. We don’t have enemies like that. Do you consider that you have enemies who either through a virus scam or economic disaster threat are trying to harm us all to reduce the population or just reset the world economically and spiritually? Jesus told us to “be prepared”—be ready—and we are told several times to “not be deceived” beginning with Moses’ instructions to the Israelites.

You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Matthew 24:44

But be careful. Don't let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the LORD and serve and worship other gods. Deuteronomy 11:16

Don’t hide—face the world and your enemies. God will give you words to say as you speak up for Him—encouraging others to be ready and not to be deceived. We have the hope of salvation through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Verses of Salvation ~ All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance--an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 1 Peter 1:3-6

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

The Lord is my shepherd…You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Psalm 23:1, 5

Olives are harvested only once a year—but around the world at many different times. So, olive oil—the first pressing known and highly valued for its purity—extra virgin olive oil EVOO—is produced year around…somewhere. I recently had some exceptional EVOO that was from Australia. Yes. They grow olives in Australia! The climate in southeastern Australia is similar to that of Greece and early immigrants smuggled cuttings in their shirt ties and inseams of their pants, according to T. J. Robinson of The Fresh-Pressed Olive Oil Club in his Autumn 2022 newsletter.

How do you use EVOO? It is great on baked potatoes instead of butter. I found that it even makes a good hand lotion when I happened to have some extra that I spilled or just poured too much out of the bottle.

If you happen to have more than one bottle of EVOO available it is fun to do a taste test, comparing the flavors of the oils. Pour just a little of each oil individually in a small glass or dish for each person. Gently swirl around and smell it. What does that smell evoke? Is it a fruity, veggie, herbal or grassy smell? Taste the oil. Is it well balanced, peppery, bitter, have an astringent taste, or just tasty. What flavor do you discern? Dip some fresh Italian bread, cooked potatoes, vegetables, cheese, or meat into the oil. How do the flavors change or are enhanced? Enjoy tasting the EVOO along with your next meal.

Do You Say…“There is no God?”

Prayer – Lord, I believe in You. I know you look down from Heaven and see all humans in all times—the entire human race. There must be some that acknowledge You. I do. Show me any corruption in my life—that I may repent and be restored to You. Will this ultimately happen with Israel? As I read Your Word—I see that at least some in Israel will turn to You—You will restore Your people. Then I will shout for joy…along with Jacob and all of Israel.

Only fools say in their hearts, "There is no God." They are corrupt, and their actions are evil; not one of them does good! God looks down from heaven on the entire human race; he looks to see if anyone is truly wise, if anyone seeks God. But no, all have turned away; all have become corrupt. No one does good, not a single one! Will those who do evil never learn? They eat up my people like bread and wouldn't think of praying to God. Terror will grip them, terror like they have never known before. God will scatter the bones of your enemies. You will put them to shame, for God has rejected them. Who will come from Mount Zion to rescue Israel? When God restores his people, Jacob will shout with joy, and Israel will rejoice. Psalm 53:1-6

Meditate. What are you thinking in your heart?

There are foolish people out there who need to turn their hearts to the Lord before it is too late…but instead they say "There is no God." I believe that there is a God—whose handiwork is in the stars at night and the wildflowers all spring and summer. Just the fact that we have four seasons give us a clue that there is some order created in this world. Have you ever seen a nautilus sea shell? Within it there is golden ratio number that is derived by dividing each number by the one before it. It turns out to be the number 1.6180 which is found in every life form, including our own DNA. Pretty awesome! With such intricate mathematics and physics, how can anyone not see God in action during creation? I am amazed.

But no, all have turned away from God—according to David’s Psalm of today. Will those who do evil never learn? A day of reconning will come. Those wicked people who reject God now—and forever—will be sorry that they did not seek God.

I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he appears to set up his Kingdom: Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching. For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths. But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don't be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you. 2 Timothy 4:1-5

What do you say? There is a God or “There is no God.”

Verses of Salvation ~ Look upon my suffering and rescue me, for I have not forgotten your instructions. Argue my case; take my side! Protect my life as you promised. The wicked are far from rescue, for they do not bother with your decrees. LORD, how great is your mercy; let me be revived by following your regulations. Psalm 119:153-156

(Being rescued is salvation.)

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

How Can I Be Like An Olive Tree?

Prayer – Lord, show me if there is anything in my life…my thought, words, or actions…that displeases You. I want to please you and will praise Your forever—for what You have done for me, for my family, friends, and neighbors. You are an awesome God.

A psalm of David, regarding the time Doeg the Edomite said to Saul, "David has gone to see Ahimelech." Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior? Don't you realize God's justice continues forever? All day long you plot destruction. Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor; you're an expert at telling lies. You love evil more than good and lies more than truth. You love to destroy others with your words, you liar! But God will strike you down once and for all. He will pull you from your home and uproot you from the land of the living. The righteous will see it and be amazed. They will laugh and say, "Look what happens to mighty warriors who do not trust in God. They trust their wealth instead and grow more and more bold in their wickedness." But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God. I will always trust in God's unfailing love. I will praise you forever, O God, for what you have done. I will trust in your good name in the presence of your faithful people. Psalm 52:1-9

Meditate. Do you worship God or your wealth?

Saul was just not a good guy. Amazing that God chose him to be king. Choices that Saul made along the way resulted in his own downfall. Note that Doeg accused Saul of loving evil, not good; of lying; and of trusting his wealth, not God. It is so easy for most people to just rely on themselves, not acknowledging that their wealth comes from God—who makes all things possible.

Old Olive Trees
Garden of Gethsemane - Jerusalem, Israel

It is God who makes us like an olive tree—trees that live for a thousand years. What a living example of life everlasting! Thriving, trusting, and praising the Lord. We can trust God’s unfailing love—I know I do. He has given me strength when I’ve been so weak and discouraged. What an encourager the Holy Spirit is—and the Holy Spirit is God. He inspires and motivates me even in writing this blog for more than ten years. I trust God. He provides guidance, protection, safety…and even a good parking place…just when I need it. And He has brought wonderful Christian friends into my life—no coincidence—just when I needed a friend, a smiling face, and a joyful opportunity to chat over a good meal. God is present with us always—but especially when we are with other Christian friends. Such friends inspire and encourage each other. I smile just remembering them. They are so unlike Saul. That’s it…striving to be like Jesus…not like Saul.

Verse of Salvation ~ May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God. Philippians 1:11

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

How’s Your Heart? Clean?

Prayer – 🎵 Create in me a clean heart, oh Lord, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, oh Lord, and don’t take Your Holy Spirit from me. Show me anything in my heart that is displeasing to You.

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just. For I was born a sinner—yes, from the moment my mother conceived me. But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there. Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me--now let me rejoice. Don't keep looking at my sins. Remove the stain of my guilt. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. Do not banish me from your presence, and don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you. Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves; then I will joyfully sing of your forgiveness. Unseal my lips, O Lord, that my mouth may praise you. You do not desire a sacrifice, or I would offer one. You do not want a burnt offering. The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. Look with favor on Zion and help her; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then you will be pleased with sacrifices offered in the right spirit—with   burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings. Then bulls will again be sacrificed on your altar. Psalm 51:1-19

Meditate. Have you sinned against God, broken any of the Ten Commandments? Have you repented?

This Psalm was written by David after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba. He knew he had done wrong. He repentantly pleaded with God for merciful forgiveness—for his sin and guilt to be removed. This is classic scripture that has been written into lyrics of songs. Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me. David was truly repentant—and as he drew close to God, God drew close to Him. His repentant spirit is what I think allowed God to think of David as a man after God’s own heart.

But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, 'I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.' Acts 13:22

Additionally, the Lord doesn’t want burnt offerings—but offerings of a broken and repentant heart with a right spirit. That is just what David sacrificial offered the Lord. Can we do any less? Set things right with God today—renew a right spirit within yourself towards God. How do you do that? Pray. How is your heart? Forgiven? Clean?

Verse of Salvation ~ Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Psalm 51:12

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

What kind of character do you have?

God Will Be the Judge. Are You Ready?

Prayer – Lord, show me how I can serve You more. I bring a sacrifice of praise into the House of the Lord—along with a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise. You are powerful and awesome. I am listening to Your words and seeking to keep walking along Your path.

The LORD, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance. Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages around him. He calls on the heavens above and earth below to witness the judgment of his people. "Bring my faithful people to me—those who made a covenant with me by giving sacrifices." Then let the heavens proclaim his justice, for God himself will be the judge. "O my people, listen as I speak. Here are my charges against you, O Israel: I am God, your God! I have no complaint about your sacrifices or the burnt offerings you constantly offer. But I do not need the bulls from your barns or the goats from your pens. For all the animals of the forest are mine, and I own the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird on the mountains, and all the animals of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats? Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory." But God says to the wicked: "Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant? For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash. When you see thieves, you approve of them, and you spend your time with adulterers. Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies. You sit around and slander your brother—your own mother's son. While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn't care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you. Repent, all of you who forget me, or I will tear you apart, and no one will help you. But giving thanks is a sacrifice that truly honors me. If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God." Psalm 50:1-23

Meditate. Are you thankful for all God has done for you?

Our God approaches, and he is not silent. Fire devours everything in his way, and a great storm rages.

How do you picture God? A great and majestic king seated on a golden throne wearing an ornate robe that gives Him wings, under which we can take shelter? He is so pure and holy that He glows. In this passage from Psalm 50, it depicts God as powerful—to the extent that fire consumes everything around Him that gets in His way. Can you see flames spewing out destroying the wickedness and evil in the world? That is scary. He’s like a fire breathing dragon…but dragons are associated with satanic things, so we know that our God is not a fire breathing dragon. God expects purity, commitment, and sacrifice, but not the sacrifice of animals. There are other things we can sacrifice like thanksgiving, praise, and even our own attitudes.

Purity - like the water lily.
Are you thankful for even the flowers you see?

Make thankfulness your sacrifice to God, and keep the vows you made to the Most High. Thankfulness gets our eyes off ourselves and helps us to focus on who gives us everything…God Almighty Himself. Without God our cupboards and table would be bare, we’d be homeless, destitute, sick, sad to the point of despondent, and probably filled with wicked, evil thoughts and actions. Recall in this passage that God rejects the wicked and calls them to repentance. He expects the faithful righteous ones, His chosen people, to keep their commitment—their vows—to Him. What vow have you made to the Lord? Have you promised to love Him with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength? Have you accepted Christ as your Savior, and declared your loyalty to Him as His disciple? That is often part of what someone says when they are baptized or join a particular denomination. God will be the judge. Are you ready?

Verse of Salvation ~ If you keep to my path, I will reveal to you the salvation of God. Psalm 50:23

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33

Who Will Redeem Your Life?

Prayer – Lord, I’m waiting patiently for Your return. I am listening to Your wise words and trusting You to take away any fear that I may experience during this stressful time. I know that just like everyone else, I will die someday…unless I’m still alive when You come to rapture Your believers. I’m ready…snatch me up!

Listen to this, all you people! Pay attention, everyone in the world! High and low, rich and poor—listen!  For my words are wise, and my thoughts are filled with insight. I listen carefully to many proverbs and solve riddles with inspiration from a harp. Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me? They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches. Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God. Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough to live forever and never see the grave. Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind. The grave is their eternal home, where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after themselves, but their fame will not last. They will die, just like animals. This is the fate of fools, though they are remembered as being wise. Like sheep, they are led to the grave, where death will be their shepherd. In the morning the godly will rule over them. Their bodies will rot in the grave, far from their grand estates. But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave. So don't be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid. For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day. People who boast of their wealth don't understand; they will die, just like animals. Psalm 49:1-20 (Underlined for emphasis.)

Meditate. Consider that everyone will die one day—and they leave their wealth or poverty behind.

Wheat gleaned after the main harvest.

Everyone will die, just like animals. No one can buy their way to Heaven…not with money or with good deeds Only God can “redeem” us. I love this verse that I underlined above: But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the power of the grave. Snatch. What a good word! It is sort of like being plucked, picked, or “harvested” and I can imagine each of those words associated with how God will redeem us when the time comes. That is how we will be raptured. One of my favorite Bible study teachers, Brenda Weltner, teaches that there will be three raptures. The first group harvested will be “the first born” who are the believers who are faithfully following Jesus Christ as their Savior. This is not necessarily the church, just the believers. This is like that first fruits that is offered at the Temple. There are likely some who go to church, but they are not true believers devoted to faithfully following Jesus.

The second group will be the 144,000 Jews who become believers in Jesus as their Messiah after the first rapture occurs. They are the main harvest. The final group to be raptured, like the gleaning of the harvested fields, will be those who come to believe in Jesus as their Savior during the Millennium. Each group will be plucked away…picked by God in the final harvest of souls. There are all kinds of theories out there about when the rapture will occur and who will be raptured, but although timelines can be established, only God the Father knows for sure when this will happen. He has a plan and He doesn’t want anyone to perish, so He is in no hurry. We cannot even say who will be raptured and what each person will do once they get to Heaven.

So don't make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. ... You think you already have everything you need. You think you are already rich. You have begun to reign in God's kingdom without us! I wish you really were reigning already, for then we would be reigning with you. ... For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God's power. Which do you choose? Should I come with a rod to punish you, or should I come with love and a gentle spirit? 1 Corinthians 4:5, 8, 20-21

As always—choose today whom you will serve. Will it be the one true living God, or will it be a false god or just money? Who will redeem your life?

Verse of Salvation ~ Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6

Who Will Guide You Until You Die?

Prayer – Lord, I put my trust in You. As You wrote in Proverbs 3:5-6… Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. I praise You—for You deserve praise, glory and honor. You are victorious and great in Jerusalem…and around the world. Open my heart, mind and soul to be ready as You have told Your followers that we should be. Is time drawing short? Give us wisdom and understanding for Your word.

The Old City of Jerusalem, rebuilt.
Israel

How great is the LORD, how deserving of praise, in the city of our God, which sits on his holy mountain! It is high and magnificent; the whole earth rejoices to see it! Mount Zion, the holy mountain, is the city of the great King! God himself is in Jerusalem's towers, revealing himself as its defender. The kings of the earth joined forces and advanced against the city. But when they saw it, they were stunned; they were terrified and ran away. They were gripped with terror and writhed in pain like a woman in labor. You destroyed them like the mighty ships of Tarshish shattered by a powerful east wind. We had heard of the city's glory, but now we have seen it ourselves—the city of the LORD of Heaven's Armies. It is the city of our God; he will make it safe forever. O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. As your name deserves, O God, you will be praised to the ends of the earth. Your strong right hand is filled with victory. Let the people on Mount Zion rejoice. Let all the towns of Judah be glad because of your justice. Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem. Walk around and count the many towers. Take note of the fortified walls, and tour all the citadels, that you may describe them to future generations. For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will guide us until we die. Psalm 48:1-14

Meditate on God’s unfailing love. Think about how God guides you using His scripture.

God will guide us until we die…or are raptured!

Picture what the city of Jerusalem must have looked like during David’s time…at the time that this Psalm was written by the descendants of Korah. According to Hope Bolinger on the Bible Study Tools website, there were actually three Korahs in the Bible. Remember the guy who was a Levite who rebelled against God and Moses. Ultimately, he was swallowed up by the earth. But he was not the person who wrote some of the Psalms, that was done by three of his descendants.

When Nehemiah rebuilt the walls around Jerusalem there were towers created in the fortified walls. Consider how Jerusalem must have looked at the time of Jesus when there were citadels…and even now we see towers and domes that declare religious beliefs, although not necessarily honoring our God. Jerusalem is a great city in the Promised Land—a city chosen and set apart by God for His people. It is the city of our God; He will make it safe forever. Forever is a long time. Those who believe in Jesus as their Savior and faithfully serve Him can look forward to living in the city of New Jerusalem with Jesus and God the Father—forever.

Verses of Salvation ~ I love you, LORD; you are my strength. The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. Psalm 18:1-2

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

Why Would I Sing Praises to God?

Prayer – Lord, You are awesome. I sing praises to You…and listen for the sound of the Trumpets. Please give me wisdom and understanding as I seek to honor You. Open my mind and heart to understand Your word.

Come, everyone! Clap your hands! Shout to God with joyful praise! For the LORD Most High is awesome. He is the great King of all the earth. He subdues the nations before us, putting our enemies beneath our feet. He chose the Promised Land as our inheritance, the proud possession of Jacob's descendants, whom he loves. God has ascended with a mighty shout. The LORD has ascended with trumpets blaring. Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King over all the earth. Praise him with a psalm. God reigns above the nations, sitting on his holy throne. The rulers of the world have gathered together with the people of the God of Abraham. For all the kings of the earth belong to God. He is highly honored everywhere. Psalm 47:1-9

Meditate. Listen for the sound of the trumpet—the wail of the shofar horn.

It isn’t long until the Feast of Trumpets—one of the great Jewish festivals. It is the first of the fall festivals. It commemorates the creation of the world and is the start of the New Year on the Jewish calendar, or Rosh Hashanah. See Leviticus 23:23-25 and Numbers 29:1-6. This year it begins at sunset on September 25, continuing to sunset on September 27. The sound of the trumpet, blown 100 times, is a reminder that God calls His people to repent. The Feast of Trumpets is followed by ten days, Days of Awe, of repentance and introspection. The Feast of Trumpets and Yom Kippur, that occurs immediately after the Days of Awe, are considered High Holy days for the Jews. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, when Jews ask for forgiveness from God and others. That day ends joyously celebrating that their sins are forgiven, and their names are inscribed in the Book of Life for another year. This year Yom Kippur is celebrated on October 4-5, 2022. Prophesy predictors are saying that these coming dates are very significant. God didn’t write prophesy in the Bible for us to ignore, but He also didn’t give us a specific calendar saying exact day of Christ Jesus’ return or the rapture for a reason. Do you think people would procrastinate until the last minute to accept Jesus as their Savior if they knew the day and the hour of His return? Sure, they would. As it is God is waiting for people’s response.

The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:9

Repent and be saved. Now is a time to give glory…and sing. To sing praises to God! To sing praises to our King! Give Him glory. Is He your King and Savior? If not, seek Him today.

Can you worship the Lord by a river.?
By the headwaters of the Jordan River?
When we were restricted from attending church in person, during COVID, it was difficult to truly worship. Oh sure, we attended church via Facebook or YouTube, but it wasn’t as worshipful as corporate worship in person. There is something to be said about true worship before the Lord in a place of worship. Although some people say they can worship God anywhere—and I do think it is possible—do people actually stop and worship God when they are out in nature hiking or even boating? I have prayed, sang hymns and choruses, and felt the presence of God outside of a worship service in a church—but lifting up my hand and praising the Lord is a deeply moving experience in God’s house. I look forward to the day when I can worship Him in person—face to face. For now, I’ll listen for the sound of the trumpet, intentionally and joyfully worshiping Him day by day…moment by moment…not just on Sunday in a designated building. I want to honor God as I sing praises to Him.

Verse of Salvation ~ Come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 95:1

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table

Summer is over…fall has begun with the equinox today and the traditional first day of fall as September 21st. Check with Google for details.

Watermelon season is over—and we enjoyed some great melons the last few weeks from our local Farmer’s Market. What should I do with the melon I still have, I wondered on this crisp fall day? It just isn't appealing cold. Maybe I could cook up some melon soupji? So, here’s a simple soup I tried.

Hot Melon Soup
2 cup honeydew melon, cut into one-inch chunks, with skin and seeds removed
1 cup leftover cooked rice
¼ cup kimchee, or more to taste

Heat the melon chunks in a small sauce pan to boiling, add the rice. Gently stir. Pour into one large bowl to serve one person or divide between two medium b I will certainly continue  owls to serve two people. Add the kimchee. More, or less, as you desire. Enjoy.

Note: You can add any other soft fruits like peaches, nectarines, mangoes, or ripe pears to this fruity soup. I was surprised to find lots of hot melon recipes out on the internet. There are some that would be tasty like the Chinese melon soup recipes that call for cooked spareribs, dried fish, red dates, and goji berries along with a winter melon. There may be some more melon soups on my table this fall. I will certainly continue to sing praises to the Lord for the variety of foods He created

What is the Lord Speaking to You?

Prayer – Lord, I am sitting quietly—being still—and knowing that You are God. Powerful. Almighty. Providing a safe place and strength for me, my family, friends and neighbor—all the time. You are awesome.

Pacific Ocean - Oregon Coast
Oceans roar and foam.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it. The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God's voice thunders, and the earth melts! The LORD of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Come, see the glorious works of the LORD: See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire. "Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world." The LORD of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Psalm 46:1-11

Meditate. Can you “be still” before the Lord God?

Read through this Psalm three times…it is short, so it won’t take long. What verse stuck out to you…spoke to you the most?

The verse…Be still, and know that I am God! is a favorite of my sweet 96-year-old Auntie Mercedes. She has been through some turbulent times and this scripture has given her comfort and strength, helping her to focus on who is really caring for her. Following her example, I’ve relied on this same passage during the recent anxiety times we’ve all felt. God is good—He doesn’t change or give up on us. I’m glad that He provides a safe place…a refuge…and strength. I know I have certainly needed an extra dose of that in the last couple of years.

There is always an element of joy with the Lord. Consider a couple of scripture (underlined for emphasis) concerning Jesus and joy.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne. Hebrews 12:1-2

At that same time Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, "O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it pleased you to do it this way.” Luke 10:21

Even in times of turmoil, stress, and abandonment, Jesus focused on the joy that He received from the Father. Likewise, we can find joy…especially in the morning.

Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Psalm 90:12-14

Life is short. Seek Jesus in your life…on a daily basis, moment by moment…and find the joy that surrounds life with Him.

Verses of Salvation ~ In that day you will sing: "I will praise you, O LORD! You were angry with me, but not any more. Now you comfort me. See, God has come to save me. I will trust in him and not be afraid. The LORD GOD is my strength and my song; he has given me victory." With joy you will drink deeply from the fountain of salvation! Isaiah 12:1-3

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

How Can I Serve the Lord?

Prayer – Lord, show me something in Your word today that I can apply to my life. May everything I think, say and do bring glory, honor, and praise to You, Lord God Almighty. Along with the nations of the earth, I praise You—forever.

Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet. You are the most handsome of all. Gracious words stream from your lips. God himself has blessed you forever. Put on your sword, O mighty warrior! You are so glorious, so majestic! In your majesty, ride out to victory, defending truth, humility, and justice. Go forth to perform awe-inspiring deeds! Your arrows are sharp, piercing your enemies' hearts. The nations fall beneath your feet. Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice. You love justice and hate evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else. Myrrh, aloes, and cassia perfume your robes. In ivory palaces the music of strings entertains you. Kings' daughters are among your noble women. At your right side stands the queen, wearing jewelry of finest gold from Ophir! Listen to me, O royal daughter; take to heart what I say. Forget your people and your family far away. For your royal husband delights in your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. The princess of Tyre will shower you with gifts. The wealthy will beg your favor. The bride, a princess, looks glorious in her golden gown. In her beautiful robes, she is led to the king, accompanied by her bridesmaids. What a joyful and enthusiastic procession as they enter the king's palace! Your sons will become kings like their father. You will make them rulers over many lands. I will bring honor to your name in every generation. Therefore, the nations will praise you forever and ever. Psalm 45:1-17

Meditate. Consider the grandeur and the joyous entrance of the King and his bride in their royal robes and the magnificent smell of the perfumes wafting through the procession.

I read in a commentary that C.S. Lewis suggested this passage, Psalm 45, was referring to the birth of Christ, the arrival of the great warrior—the bridegroom—with great joy and celebration. Jesus Christ is indeed the King of kings, Lord of lords. This passage describes Him as more beautiful than any others, and we could consider other interpretations of “fairer” to be as more powerful or impartial. Look at the verse that describes the gracious words that the King spoke. Near the beginning of His ministry Jesus was spoken of as using gracious words.

Scroll at a synagogue in Israel.
When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD's favor has come." He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. "The Scripture you've just heard has been fulfilled this very day!" Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips. "How can this be?" they asked. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" Luke 4:16-22 (Underlined for emphasis.)

In the book of Revelation there is a description of Jesus, King of kings and Lord of lords, riding on a white horse.

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords. Revelation 19:11-16

Note that the sword comes from His mouth. Recall other places in scripture that talk about the sword…as in the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. This verse below is from Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus concerning putting on the armor of God so that Christians can withstand the evil strategy of the devil.

Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17

God has blessed Jesus, because of His obedience, loving justice and hating evil. This passage in Psalm 45 tells us that God has anointed Jesus with the oil of joy. This is repeated in Hebrews 1:9. Are you anointed with joy, like Jesus?

What do you think of the verse…Your sons will become kings like their father. You will make them rulers over many lands…?

Another translation, the King James Version, states this as making the sons princes. Appointing or regarding them as such. This past week we just saw a prince become a king as Prince Charles became King Charles. But some people interpret this passage, and others, as to indicate that those who faithfully believe in Jesus as their Savior will serve Him as kings and priests as described in Revelation.

And when he took the scroll, the four living beings and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp, and they held gold bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of God's people. And they sang a new song with these words: "You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seals and open it. For you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation. And you have caused them to become a Kingdom of priests for our God. And they will reign on the earth." Revelation 5:8-10

Now is the time to make the choice to faithfully serve our Lord, if someday you want to serve God as a king or priest. Only the faithful believers will be given that honor and privilege. You may think you just want to make it into heaven…but consider how you could serve Jesus someday reigning with and for Him. Just like Joshua and the early Hebrew people as they were just about to cross into the Promised Land were challenged…chose this day whom you will serve. How can you serve the Lord?

Verses of Salvation ~ This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners"—and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen. 1 Timothy 1:15-17

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16

Are You Sleeping?

Prayer – Lord, You know me better than I know myself…but You still love me. I live to please You—so show me if there is anything in me that offends You—and lead me in Your path to everlasting life.

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. Psalm 44:20-26 (Also, read Psalm 44:1-19.)

God knows our secrets…because He knows everything—He always has and He always will. As we are told over and over…He knows…

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! Psalm 139:1-7

For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do.  Job 34:21

He punishes the nations—won't he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn't he also know what you are doing? Psalm 94:10

Sleep! Doesn’t this Psalmist know that God never, never, ever sleeps. That is hard for us to imagine, since we mortals get tired and must sleep. Yet, sleep is illusive for some… and others fall asleep at inopportune moments—like when they are driving. God may rest. When He was done with creation, on the seventh day He rested (Genesis 2:2). Likewise, He told us in the Ten Commandments to rest on the Sabbath day. He is all powerful—even over sleep.

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. ... The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:1-4, 7-8 (Underlined for emphasis.)

God doesn’t reject those He loves—Israel or any of His chosen people, including His adopted family—those who believe in Him and trust Him with their very lives. Believe in Jesus to become part of God’s family.

The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. Psalm 94:14

Verse of Salvation ~ If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. Romans 10:9-10

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16
