Are You Sleeping?

Prayer – Lord, You know me better than I know myself…but You still love me. I live to please You—so show me if there is anything in me that offends You—and lead me in Your path to everlasting life.

If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread our hands in prayer to foreign gods, God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart. But for your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep. Wake up, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Get up! Do not reject us forever. Why do you look the other way? Why do you ignore our suffering and oppression? We collapse in the dust, lying face down in the dirt. Rise up! Help us! Ransom us because of your unfailing love. Psalm 44:20-26 (Also, read Psalm 44:1-19.)

God knows our secrets…because He knows everything—He always has and He always will. As we are told over and over…He knows…

O LORD, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I'm far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, LORD. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! Psalm 139:1-7

For God watches how people live; he sees everything they do.  Job 34:21

He punishes the nations—won't he also punish you? He knows everything—doesn't he also know what you are doing? Psalm 94:10

Sleep! Doesn’t this Psalmist know that God never, never, ever sleeps. That is hard for us to imagine, since we mortals get tired and must sleep. Yet, sleep is illusive for some… and others fall asleep at inopportune moments—like when they are driving. God may rest. When He was done with creation, on the seventh day He rested (Genesis 2:2). Likewise, He told us in the Ten Commandments to rest on the Sabbath day. He is all powerful—even over sleep.

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. ... The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:1-4, 7-8 (Underlined for emphasis.)

God doesn’t reject those He loves—Israel or any of His chosen people, including His adopted family—those who believe in Him and trust Him with their very lives. Believe in Jesus to become part of God’s family.

The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his special possession. Psalm 94:14

Verse of Salvation ~ If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. Romans 10:9-10

Memory Verse of the Week ~ In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:16
