Then
God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the
night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights
in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened. Genesis 1:14-15
Memory Scripture of the Week –
Genesis 1:9 Then God said, "Let the waters
beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear."
And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:10 God called the dry ground
"land" and the waters "seas." And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:11 Then God said, "Let the land
sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow
seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees
from which they came." And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:12-13 The land produced vegetation--all
sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds
produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. And
evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.
Genesis 1:14-15 Then God said, "Let lights
appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark
the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the
earth." And that is what happened.
Genesis 1:16 God made two great lights—the larger one
to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the
stars.
Genesis 1:17-19 God set these lights in the sky to
light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from
the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning
came, marking the fourth day.
Red Moon - January 20, 2019 West Richland, WA - photo by Mike Hunacek |
The earth rotates around the sun…and
the moon rotates around the earth. Basic astronomy. Just as God said…we mark
the days, seasons, and years by the “lights” that appear in the sky. The gravitational
influence of the moon controls the tides of the oceans…and even fluctuations in
other large bodies of water, like the Great Lakes. The moon has a great
emotional effect on some people. “I love you to the moon and back.” That is a
favorite mantra—binding many friends and relatives together. The moon is
beautiful and shines down on us, gracing us with a restful evening light. I
love to look at the moon.
Negatively, studies have shown that
more assaults, homicides and suicides occur during a full moon. I don’t think
that God originally intended that. Just an example of despair that the evil in
the world propagates. God put the “lights” in the sky for a better use…to help
us find our way and mark our days, months and years. The moon has been totally
awesome several times in the last year or so providing a glowing red appearance
that sends some people running for their Bibles to reread the prophet Joel.
The
sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and
terrible day of the LORD arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the
LORD will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as
the LORD has said. These will be among the survivors whom the LORD has called. Joel
2:31-32
Are you shaking in your boots…or
calling on the name of the Lord? Note that the red moon is to occur before the Lord arrives. Don’t wait
until the last moment to call on His name…to claim Him as your Lord and Savior.
That red moon is just a warning sign.
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, I trust You as my
Lord and Savior. Your creation of the lights in the sky to separate the day and
the night, to guide us and help us mark our days, weeks, months and years is brilliant.
Nighttime would be boring without the moon. It sparks such debate…where it came
from…how long it has been there…what it is made of? Well, we do know some of
the answers, but it just raises more questions and yet there are those of us
who just enjoy the soft light of the moon…and its changing shape as it rotates
around. Crescent or full. It is beautiful. Thank You.
