In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and
empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering
over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light,"
and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the
light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness
"night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.
Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the
waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth." And that is what
happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the
waters of the heavens. God called the space "sky." And evening passed
and morning came, marking the second day. Genesis 1:1-8

What better
place to “begin” memorizing scripture than “The Beginning.” Jewish children,
particularly boys during Jesus time, had to memorize large passages…the entire
Torah. The Torah was the first five books of the Bible. Can we do anything
less? We have a great opportunity—but we are so spoiled. We have the scripture
written out in many translations at our fingertips…on our phones, iPads,
computers, and even multiple hard-copies. What are you going to do?

In
the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and
empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering
over the surface of the waters.
God was there…in the beginning…before
the beginning.
"I
am the Alpha and the Omega—the beginning and the end," says the Lord God.
"I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty
One." Revelation 1:8
It is hard to get our human heads
around the fact that God was before time began…and that He is eternal. The
beginning and the end.
Some people will debate that God
created the heavens and the earth. I trust Him at His word. If He said it…it is
true. The Spirit of God hovered over the
surface of the waters. That shows us that the Holy Spirit was there at the
Beginning. Father, Son and Holy Spirit were present at Creation. Jesus’
presence was recorded in the book of John. Jesus is the Word—and He existed in
the Beginning. Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness.
In
the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was
God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything
that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in
the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John
1:1-5
Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You for Your Creation—for
the heavens and the earth. What appeared formless and empty, and dark, deep
waters was the Beginning. The Beginning of a great and wonderful plan for
mankind. A home…and hope. The Beginning of Eternity. And Holy Spirit of God—You
were there hovering over the surface of those dark waters—with Jesus,
shining through that darkness into our new world. It is all so wonderful.
