Lights in the Sky


Then God said, "Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them be signs to mark the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth." And that is what happened. Genesis 1:14-15

The earth rotates around the sun…and the moon rotates around the earth. Basic astronomy. Just as God said…we mark the days, seasons, and years by the “lights” that appear in the sky. The gravitational influence of the moon controls the tides of the oceans…and even fluctuations in other large bodies of water, like the Great Lakes. The moon has a great emotional effect on some people. “I love you to the moon and back.” That is a favorite mantra—binding many friends and relatives together. The moon is beautiful and shines down on us, gracing us with a restful evening light. I love to look at the moon.

Negatively, studies have shown that more assaults, homicides and suicides occur during a full moon. I don’t think that God originally intended that. Just an example of despair that the evil in the world propagates. God put the “lights” in the sky for a better use…to help us find our way and mark our days, months and years. The moon has been totally awesome several times in the last year or so providing a glowing red appearance that sends some people running for their Bibles to reread the prophet Joel.
The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the LORD arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the LORD has said. These will be among the survivors whom the LORD has called. Joel 2:31-32
Are you shaking in your boots…or calling on the name of the Lord? Note that the red moon is to occur before the Lord arrives. Don’t wait until the last moment to call on His name…to claim Him as your Lord and Savior. That red moon is just a warning sign.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, I trust You as my Lord and Savior. Your creation of the lights in the sky to separate the day and the night, to guide us and help us mark our days, weeks, months and years is brilliant. Nighttime would be boring without the moon. It sparks such debate…where it came from…how long it has been there…what it is made of? Well, we do know some of the answers, but it just raises more questions and yet there are those of us who just enjoy the soft light of the moon…and its changing shape as it rotates around. Crescent or full. It is beautiful. Thank You.

Fruit from Plants—Goodness From God

The land produced vegetation--all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.  Genesis 1:12-13

So we have another evening and morning…and the Third Day. A day when God created plants…and declared…it was good. Do you think if He had tasted a good sweet seedless watermelon on a hot day that He would have declared it…terrific…or maybe…sensational? At least He would have given a nice sigh…ahhhh!

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are sensational for having developed such a variety of fruits and vegetables around the world that are all essential to the health and well-being of mankind. Thank You.

Vegetation sprouting. Can’t you just imagine all these plants sprouting up at God’s command? Poof! From the ground…trees, bushes, herb, and all sorts of floras sprang up, flowered and started growing fruit and vegetables. No one was there to see it—but just visualize all the different colors, shapes and varieties of plants. Overwhelming! God was so…well creative…with His Creation! I am amazed just with the variety of plants in my area—which is a dry semi-desert plateau. We have such an array of plants in the spring. Then there are the plants of people’s yards, gardens and near-by farms which produce such diversity. This is only my corner of the world. When you consider all the different climates it is just remarkable. All this world-wide diversity came from the mind of God. He said… “Let the land sprout with vegetation….” And it did. That is what happened. We can’t do that! Sometimes in my garden, when things aren’t growing like I wished they would…I wish I could just say… Let the land sprout with vegetation. But that is useless. I don’t have the power to make it happen. Only God does. And He did.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...Thank You once again for creating such wonderful, bountiful plants for us to enjoy as food and just to admire. Your creativity is amazing.

Good Land…Good Seas


God called the dry ground "land" and the waters "seas." And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:10

It was good. Good. God judged His Creation as…good. So often we are asked to rate something as poor, fair, good, excellent or outstanding, but God didn’t have that rating system. Good was good. If you read ahead in the rest of this first chapter of Genesis you’ll see that God used this pronouncement several times. See Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21 and 25. It was good.Then in Genesis 1:31 God gives Himself another kudo—a higher mark of excellence.  It was very good.

Dry Ground...Land.    Waters...Sea.
It was good.
The dry ground, “land” and the water, “sea.” God knew that all that He was to create couldn’t just live in the water…or on the land. Both were necessary. There is a balance between earth and sea. We need the sea not only for the plants and creatures that live there, but also for the evaporation of water to form clouds and “water” the earth. That water cycle…with water returning to the sea takes nutrients back to the oceans. The whole process is ever so complicated…yet simple. God is magnificent in His design of the systems of the earth. What do you like most about the “land” and the “sea”?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus...I see You as good…as very good. Thank You for Your wonderful creation. The land and the sea are so essential to the beginning of life…and are a delight to behold. I love going to the ocean and hearing the roar of the sea. It is renewing and refreshing to me. I am eagerly waiting for spring—so be out in my garden, digging in the soil—the very earth that You created. It is good.

Where Do You Find Dry Ground?

Dry Ground Appeared.
Dry Ground. There are several incidences of dry ground in the Bible. Consider the Hebrew people as they faced the plagues, the exodus from Egypt and their entry into the Promised Land. Another episode of dry ground occurs during Elijah’s prophesy.

And if they don't believe you or listen to you even after these two signs, then take some water from the Nile River and pour it out on the dry ground. When you do, the water from the Nile will turn to blood on the ground." Exodus 4:9

…the people of Israel walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on each side! Exodus 14:22

Meanwhile, the priests who were carrying the Ark of the LORD's Covenant stood on dry ground in the middle of the riverbed as the people passed by. They waited there until the whole nation of Israel had crossed the Jordan on dry ground. Joshua 3:17

Then Elijah folded his cloak together and struck the water with it. The river divided, and the two of them went across on dry ground! 2 Kings 2:8

Dry Ground.  One of my hubby’s favorite movies is “Water World” where water covers the whole earth in some future time and people are searching for Dry Ground. Of course, there are good guys and bad guys who are involved in some brutal scenes with machine guns, so it’s not a “family” movie. I don’t want to spoil it for you…but the good guys do find Dry Ground with lots of plants and fresh water. Life will be good there.

God created dry ground and provided it for His chosen people on more than one occasion.  Have you ever experienced dry ground…like a refuge in a storm…where spiritually God has provided peace—or at least a serene place during a time of turmoil? I can certainly say that He has done that for me. Once was when I was dealing with a traumatic situation in our extended family, friends of my sister came along side of us and helped out. That gave me peace. Dry stable ground of peace in an ugly stormy time. I hope that God has ministered to you through His people in some way…or used you to help others out when they are passing through the valley of the shadow of death.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, Thank you for creating dry ground and protection as we pass through times of trouble, trial, temptation, turmoil or travail. You gathered the waters together and let the dry ground appear during the beginning of Creation. Please continue to keep Your followers safe on Your holy dry ground physically and spiritually. We look to You as our Savior and our Redeemer. Continue to bless all who search for and follow You in Israel and around the world.

Begin at the Beginning


Memory Scripture of the Week
Genesis 1:1-2  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis 1:3-4  Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:5 God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.
Genesis 1:6 Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth."

Review:

God created the heavens and the earth with deep waters…light and dark and that area between the water called space or sky. God said…and it happened. He has such power. Note that the light was good. Who is good except God? Jesus said…
I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. John 12:46
Jesus is the light of the world.
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:4-5

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." John 8:12
So image the light shining in the darkness. Jesus…shining in the darkness. He was the one creating Creation and in His purity and light shone through the darkness. Spark. Flash. A bright blinding light across the heavens and earth. And God saw that the light was good. God is good!

Prayer ~ Dear God—Your Creation is awesome to behold…to just grasp the expanse of it. Heavens and earth, water, light and darkness—separated by space. Please give me wisdom to understand the vastness, depth, and spiritual significance of Your Creation. And help me to memorize Your word—hiding it deep in my mind and writing it on my heart.

שָׁמַיִם
Day Two. Creation moves along. Evening and morning. Evening and morning.

The heavens, earth, deep waters, light, darkness, and space have all been created. That space that God created He named sky. In the Hebrew it is שָׁמַיִם shâmayim. In the King James Version that is translated as “heaven, heavens, or sky, being the visible heavens.” Sky. It isn’t anything we can really touch or really even an expanse that we can describe besides being a lofty area. Space. How do you describe that? It is an area that exists between two other entities or areas. Does it just go on forever…or is it just around what is to known as earth? Only time and “space” can tell. We must be patient with God. He isn’t finished, nor is He tired yet. There is some good stuff to happen. God knows that He has some good things that He is going to create.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, Thank You for coming to earth and for Your great Creation. The love of God the Father is boundless...and it shows in His Creation. It is overwhelming to be part of His plan—and see it unfolding before our eyes.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
In the beginning…what is the very first thing you created in the kitchen? The first thing I remember cooking all by myself was Chocolate Chip Cookies. One summer when I was seven or eight years old my Mom went off to a meeting leaving us kids with Dad to supervise us. I asked Dad if I could make cookies—and he asked if I knew how to do it. Sure. I could read the ingredients—they were printed on the bag of chocolate chips. I carefully measured out all the ingredients into a big bowl and stirred them together…and then I read the “instructions” that described the correct order of stirring together all the ingredients. Oops. It was a little lumpy—but I kept stirring….and then I lopped spoonfuls of the dough onto a cookie sheet and baked them. Yum! That was the beginning of my foodie adventure. You just can’t go wrong with chocolate chip cookies. Enjoy with a tall glass of cool milk. These can even be relished with the King of Kings—especially at a Banquet with the King.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) Nestlé® chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecan or walnuts

Preheat oven to 375° F. Combine flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in chips and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.

Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 5 dozen cookies.

That is What Happened.


And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. Genesis 1:7

That is what happened. God spoke…He made…this space to separate the waters. Poof. Were there lightning bolts as the air rushed about creating the space? God is so powerful…and yet so gentle that He created delicate flowers, wispy clouds and precious little babies in all sorts of animals. I don’t imagine that there was anything delicate about the space He created to separate the waters. Water is heavy and God just pushed it out of the way to create the “space” He needed for other things. Space. Space is such a rare commodity. Everyone wants and needs space and God just created what He wanted…where He needed it to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. There it is…waters of Heavens and waters of Earth. Splish. Splash. Like darkness and light. God created and separated things we often take for granted. What things in your life do you separate from others?

Prayer ~ Lord God. You are all powerful and majestic. Awesome. I can only imagine the power of the space being created. Create in me a space that only You can fill…with Your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control. May Your creation continue to amaze people around the world and draw them closer to You…to Your truth, Your way and the life that You give…abundantly.

Space Between

Genesis 1:6 Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth."
Genesis 1:7 And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.

SPACE. God said it and it happened. Elbows out…wiggling. Space created from where there had been darkness and light. We all need our “space.” In different cultures different people need different amounts of space between them and their close friends, business associates or strangers. Even within the United States some people, like those raised in the wide open wilderness or open farmlands, need lots of space. I find that some city folks are so used to crowding that they aren’t offended when someone gets up close to them. Up close…but not personal. And let’s mind our manners—no spitting. God is a gentleman. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit at Creation probably didn’t have a problem with their individual space. Remember the Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters. He didn’t get in the way of the Father and the Son as they created. They are all respectful of each other. Can we be the same? Respectful of each other’s space?

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the World (John 8:12). Shine Your light on me—illuminating Your truth...giving hope to me and to everyone. May Your light through me. May the space that You created never be void in my life…and may I feel Your presence—Your light shining in the darkness.

Day One


God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day. Genesis 1:5

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.
Genesis 1:3-4 Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.

Can we mark time without light?
 Day One. Evening passed and morning came, marking the first day. It is confusing as to the custom of the Jewish people begin their days in the evening. We in the western world mark our day from midnight to midnight. Around the world with 24 time zones there is always a new day beginning. Light is day…and darkness is night, but do you consider the night belonging to the day before or after it? With our 24-hour counting some of that nighttime does belong to the day before the sunrises on that day and some nighttime belongs to the day after sunset. Too confusing. I don’t know if I could even explain this to a 4-year old. My four year old granddaughter just knows it is daytime when she is awake. That is good enough for her!

Imagine how God must have felt when He marked the first day! Overwhelming to us humans—just to consider the magnitude of it all. Poof-Bang-Boom! Darkness and Light. Day One. God was going to be exceptionally busy continuing His Creation. So powerful—and we just take night and day for granted. It happens—we can’t change a thing except to turn on or off a light switch. Let there be light.

Prayer ~ Lord God, You have given us such a wonderful gift with light…and even with darkness—so that we may rest. We rest in Your presence…knowing that You will bring the light of day…tomorrow. You are the Light...and You are always with us. We are not alone in darkness.

Let There Be Light


Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:3-4

Let there be Light. There are so many references in the Bible to light. Here are a few to remind us… Jesus is the light. The light of the world.
You light a lamp for me. The LORD, my God, lights up my darkness. Psalm 18:28

Light shines in the darkness for the godly. They are generous, compassionate, and righteous. Psalm 112:4

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it. John 1:5

For God, who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.                      2 Corinthians 4:6

But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God's very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. 1 John 1:5

There is no darkness in God. He is light. The light of the world. The light shining in the darkness…at the Beginning of Creation. And just as God declared...the light was good.

Prayer ~ Lord God, darkness wants to crowd in on these dreary winter days. Illumine my heart and mind with Your light…the true light of the world. Show me Your truths and dispel any dark thoughts from my mind. You are light…in You there is no darkness.
