Without the Holy Spirit inspiring the
authors of the Bible…what would we have? Certainly not “cleverly devised tales.”
Peter was there with Jesus—watching and learning from Him…from our very God
Himself. Here’s more of what he wrote as translated in the NASB version.
For we did not follow cleverly devised tales
when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we
were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For when He received honor and glory from God
the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory,
"This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"-- and we
ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the
holy mountain. So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well
to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and
the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no
prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy
was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke
from God. 2 Peter 1:16-21
God the Father was pleased with Jesus, His
Son. He was also pleased with the Holy Spirit, who was sent to guide, remind,
and encourage us after Jesus went to Heaven. It is He who has inspired the
Bible writings. Peter gives us a good warning…you’d do well to pay attention to
the prophetic word as to a light shining in the dark. That Morning Star is
Jesus. Jesus Himself even said to the Pharisees…"I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in
the darkness, but will have the Light of life." John 8:12. Light is
important—it is central to everything about Jesus…and actually, God. Consider from
the beginning of time—there was light created and God was there…Father, Son and
Holy Spirit. All your favorite Bible stories likely have light. When Moses and
the Israelites went on their Exodus through the desert, a pillar of light led
them. Think of other times and stories. Can you find the light?
Prayer
~ Holy Spirit, show us the light, especially during this Advent season. Give us
grace to share the light with others. I understand that the prophets didn’t
make up the stories about Jesus…and His birth, but that their writings were
inspired and revealed by the Holy Spirit—by You!
