Power Extinguished?

Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit….1 Thessalonians 5:16-19

For the past eleven months we have been focusing on scripture that deals, refers to, or teaches us something about the Holy Spirit. Do you realize that the Holy Spirit can be quenched or grieved—His power extinguished in your life? Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:29-32. The Holy Spirit is part of God…so we need to humbly honor Him and reverently obey His calling, nudges and guidance. The Holy Spirit speaks to us through the Bible and in a still small voice, nudging us to do what is right to please God. We all make choices every day…and we can chose to listen to the Holy Spirit or purposefully oppose His actions in our lives. Some things that will block the Holy Spirit are:

  • Doubt or intellectual pride that keeps us from using our childlike faith and believing. (Matthew 18:2-4)
  • Religious traditions that don’t encourage us to go beyond “the box” and see things in a new and different light.
  • Fear of God’s supernatural power.
  • Unconfessed sin and sinful habits or attitudes block our communication with God. To be filled with the Spirit we must repent quickly from any sin and seek God’s holiness in our lives.
  • Emotional hang-ups. Seek emotional healing from the past, from grief and depression so that anointing can be experienced.
  • Self-centeredness. Yield yourself—all of your plans, finances, and relationships. Only those who totally give themselves to God can experience the fullness of His power.

What will you chose to do today?
Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, Please forgive me for not putting You first in all that I think, say and do—as well as my plans and relationships. Show me a better way to live moment by moment with a grateful heart.
