Obedience and Trumpets

So the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon; and he blew a trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called together to follow him. Judges 6:34

Read the story of Gideon in Judges 6-8. Gideon ask the Angel of the Lord an interesting question—that many of us may also ask…if the Lord is with us, why is all this befallen us? Gideon didn’t have much confidence in himself…How can I deliver Israel? …I am the least in my father’s house….Judges 6:15. Gideon was obedient in tearing down the Baal alters and Asherah poles as God asked him to do—even before the Spirit of the Lord was poured out on him. God gave him a sign—as he asked—to show him that it was God Himself who was speaking to him about fighting the Midianites. Gideon continued to be obedient to the Lord as he directed the Israelite army to creatively “fight” the Midianite army with trumpets and torches. God is so creative! Those Midianites were so gullible. They were filled with fear—and lacked faith. Those are opposites—fear and faith. Great faith—no fear. Great fear—no faith. Where is your fear…your faith?

Prayer ~ Lord, I am amazed by the people You chose in the Old Testament to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Here’s Gideon who was obedient. Even when I don’t have confidence in what I can do for You, I know that You can fill me—like Gideon—with Your Spirit so that I can serve You creatively. I look forward to the ingenious ways that You can have use my talents.
