God Helps You

Then the Spirit came upon Amasai, who was the chief of the thirty, and he said, "We are yours, O David, and with you, O son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to him who helps you; Indeed, your God helps you!" Then David received them and made them captains of the band. 1 Chronicles 12:18.

The Holy Spirit was on the move and came upon the chief of David’s men. Amasai declared that God helps David. David was anointed king of Israel (see 1 Chronicles 11:3) and God helped David and his army to be victorious over the Philistine army. Then as David brought the Ark of the Covenant to a tent in Jerusalem  he praised God and gave Him glory—before all of Israel. Another instance of the anointing of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament.

We have to be careful not to remove scripture from its context. This is a powerful story of God using David—protecting him, giving him wisdom and strength. And of the anointing of the David’s army official—acknowledging God’s influence in David’s life with the praise. Peace must have been precious then…as it would be now in Israel. We have hope that God will do the same one day for modern Israel. Surely He will give us all peace at some point in our lives.

Prayer ~ Holy Spirit, may we dance and rejoice as David did when the Ark was brought into Jerusalem. You helped David—help the people of Israel now, too, showing them mercy, compassion, and peace in their souls—even when there is not peace in their nation.
