Sing A New Song to the Lord

Prayer – Lord, I sing and shout for Joy. You make my life joyful…no matter what. Rain, cloudy, snow, wind, physically or spiritually. You still bring the assurance of joy. You promised to give abundant life—filled with joy. I accept Your promise and trust You to fulfill it in my life…today, tomorrow, and forever.

Let the hills sing out songs of joy!

Sing songs of joy before the Lord!

Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has done wonderful deeds. His right hand has won a mighty victory; his holy arm has shown his saving power! The LORD has announced his victory and has revealed his righteousness to every nation! He has remembered his promise to love and be faithful to Israel. The ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. Shout to the LORD, all the earth; break out in praise and sing for joy! Sing your praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song, with trumpets and the sound of the ram's horn. Make a joyful symphony before the LORD, the King! Let the sea and everything in it shout his praise! Let the earth and all living things join in. Let the rivers clap their hands in glee! Let the hills sing out their songs of joy before the LORD. For the LORD is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness. Psalm 98:1-9

Meditate. Can you sing songs of joy to the Lord your King?

Make a joyful symphony before the Lord, the King! I love going to the symphony. Live music is always so exciting—invigorating—illuminating! I played the French horn in the band for three years, in grades eight through ten. My parts were never the lead…but that was OK with me. I loved to hear all the instruments chiming in with their parts…and blending together in perfect harmony…well, as perfect as we could be. From the time I first heard the US Marine Corp Band when I was in probably the fifth grade, I’ve loved live music. Strike up the band! I’m thinking that music will be especially joyous in Heaven. Will we have brass bands and stringed orchestras? Your guess is as good as mine. God gives us a clue here with mention of a joyful symphony before the Lord. Even birds can make a joyful symphony—or a raucous noise. Yes, the whole world can make joyous music…or noise. Listen carefully.

Jesus, when speaking to His disciples shortly before He was crucified, talked about joy that cannot be taken from them, or from us, if we believe in Him.

So you have sorrow now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy. At that time you won't need to ask me for anything. I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name. You haven't done this before. Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. John 16:22-24

The Psalmist who wrote this Psalm of the day spoke about the LORD is coming to judge the world with justice, and the nations with fairness. We can all count on being judged—and note that Jesus will judge with justice—what we deserve. Even if we believe in Him as our Savior, we will have to give account to Jesus for our choices…our behavior. Those who live faithfully will be rewarded for their faithfulness. These are not to be misconstrued as earning our way into Heaven. No. It is just that there are rewards for obedience. See the parables about the faithful servant in Matthew 25:14-30. Are you obedient and faithful to doing what God wants you to do? If you don’t know what it is that He expects of you, then dig a little deeper into your Bible—beginning with the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. All of the New Testament gives us direction. Ask God to show you what He wants you to do…and then Sing a new song to the LORD!

Verses of Salvation ~ I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ's return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation--the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ--for this will bring much glory and praise to God. Philippians 1:9-11
