Why Do We Sing to the Lord?

Prayer – Lord, open my eyes, my ears, my heart, and my mind to Your word…Your truth. I am so excited to just study Your scriptures and learn about You. When I read verse by verse through most chapters, I am filled with joy—even when the verses are more focused on “enemies” than on Your power, might, mercy, grace and love. I know that You hear the words of these Psalms—as they are sung back to You—and may they bring You glory and honor. I praise You, Lord God, for who You are—my Lord and Savior, the Almighty God, Creator, Sustainer, Healer, Judge, Brother, Friend, Light of the World, The Way, The Truth, and the Life. You are life itself.

It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening, accompanied by the ten-stringed harp and the melody of the lyre. You thrill me, LORD, with all you have done for me! I sing for joy because of what you have done. O LORD, what great works you do! And how deep are your thoughts. Only a simpleton would not know, and only a fool would not understand this: Though the wicked sprout like weeds and evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever. But you, O LORD, will be exalted forever. Your enemies, LORD, will surely perish; all evildoers will be scattered. But you have made me as strong as a wild ox. You have anointed me with the finest oil. My eyes have seen the downfall of my enemies; my ears have heard the defeat of my wicked opponents. But the godly will flourish like palm trees and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon. For they are transplanted to the LORD's own house. They flourish in the courts of our God. Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital and green. They will declare, "The LORD is just! He is my rock! There is no evil in him!" Psalm 92:1-15

Meditate. Sing to the Lord.

This is a Psalm that was noted to be sung on the Sabbath Day. That day varies…and can be any day that you set aside to worship and honor the Lord. Over the years we’ve had Pastors who have celebrated their Sabbath on literally every other day of the week than Sunday and a wonderful friend now who recognizes Thursday as her Sabbath Day. I respect that and try not to call or text her then.  Do you celebrate a special Sabbath Day? One of the Ten Commandments focuses on keeping the Sabbath.

Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy. Exodus 20:8-11

Does God still expect us to keep this commandment? I think He does—yet should we keep it on Saturday or on Sunday, as the first century Christian did? That is for each of us to struggle with and decide. Personally, my Sabbath Day is Sunday. A day that I set aside—with no work—or as little work as possible in preparing meals—and no housework, shopping, or other labor-intensive jobs. It is a day to honor God and worship Him in a spirit of truth with other like-minded individuals.

Every day is a day to honor God—and like the Psalmist who wrote this, I want to give thanks, sing joyful praises to the Lord, proclaiming my love for Him and His faithfulness. He is to be exalted forever. I especially liked the verse: Even in old age they will still produce fruit; they will remain vital…. Even when the faithful people that I know get old…or just older…they still keep on keeping focused on the Lord and I can see that they have the Fruit of the Spirit flowing out of them. Oh, to be like them!

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! - Galatians 5:22-23

God is my rock—that sure foundation in my life. I praise Him morning and the evening…and all throughout the day. Why sing to the Lord? Because He is worthy of praise. He faithfully gives us abundant joy and hope for a salvation worthy of our love…and of His love for us.

Verse of Salvation ~ The LORD lives! Praise to my Rock! May God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted! 2 Samuel 22:47

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Ask, using my name, and you will receive, and you will have abundant joy. John 16:24b

It is November – consider daily: What are you Thankful for today?
