Prayer – Lord, thank you for the prayers of Your servant, Moses—who was respectful to You, wise, compassionate and caring. Like Moses, I ask that You “Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.”
A prayer of Moses, the man of God.
Lord, through all the generations you have been our
home! Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and
the world, from beginning to end, you are God. You turn people back to dust,
saying, "Return to dust, you mortals!" For you, a thousand years are
as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. You sweep people away like dreams
that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning. In the
morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered. We
wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury. You spread out our
sins before you—our secret sins—and you see them all. We live our lives beneath
your wrath, ending our years with a groan. Seventy years are given to us! Some
even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble;
soon they disappear, and we fly away. Who can comprehend the power of your
anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. Teach us to realize
the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. O LORD, come back to us!
How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us each morning
with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. Give
us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with
good. Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your
glory. And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts
successful. Yes, make our efforts successful! Psalm 90:1-17
Meditate. Read God’s word and listen to what He is saying.
Mankind was cursed for being tempted... and eating the forbidden fruit. |
Dust to dust…ashes to ashes. That is just about what God said to Adam as his curse for eating the forbidden fruit.
And to the man he
said, "Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I
commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life
you will struggle to scratch a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles
for you, though you will eat of its grains. By the sweat of your brow will you
have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For
you were made from dust, and to dust you will return." Genesis 3:17-19
This Psalm is the oldest of all the Psalms, as it was
written by Moses, long before David, Korah or the other Psalmists lived. Note that
Moses is reminding the nation of Israel in this prayer to God, about how short life is, how sinful man
still is, and pleading for God’s mercy and approval. Above all else, we are
always seeking God’s love. He created us with a void in our hearts that only He
can fill with His approval and love. Are we wise enough to see that on our own?
Does God Himself have to reveal to us our need for wisdom…for His wisdom?
Sing for joy! Although the best years of our lives may be
filled with pain and trouble, Moses is appealing to his Lord and friend, God, that
He give gladness in proportion to the suffering. What a concept. Those
who suffer will be filled with joy overflowing. Ahhh, I love that thought and
am reminded of friends, relatives, and acquaintances who are in great pain…or
have been until they breathed their last breath…and I rejoice in this promise
that Moses asks God for an equal amount of contentment or pleasure to fill
their lives. Heaven will be a wonderful place. No pain, no sorrow! God heard
Moses request…and I am certain that it will be one day fulfilled! Oh, that
these precious painfilled believers could feel that release of pain even now…but
they must wait and endure. God has a plan. Seventy years…or more. I know several
ladies who have reached the age of 96 this year…and one who is 102. That is
well beyond Moses’ prediction of seventy or eighty years! Quality of life is
important—why must our loved ones suffer? Will we one day have to face that
pain of our bodies wearing out? Will having the wisdom of the Lord take away
the groans of life’s end? LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay?
Take pity on your servants! Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love,
so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.
