Jerusalem, the City of God

Prayer – Lord, please reveal Yourself to me through Your word today. Hear my prayers whether I am praying to You in Jerusalem…with my face to the east towards Jerusalem…or just reverently to You, knowing that You’ve promised to hear my prayers. You know what is on my heart even before I speak it. Touch the physical bodies of those I know and love, give traveling mercies to those who are enjoying a time of vacation, and mightily shower comfort, strength and hope on those who are dealing with loss. You are a remarkable God to hear all our prayers…and care about each person all around the world. Thank You…and I praise You, continually today and always.

On the holy mountain stands the city founded by the LORD. He loves the city of Jerusalem more than any other city in Israel. O city of God, what glorious things are said of you! I will count Egypt and Babylon among those who know me—also Philistia and Tyre, and even distant Ethiopia. They have all become citizens of Jerusalem! Regarding Jerusalem it will be said, "Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there." And the Most High will personally bless this city. When the LORD registers the nations, he will say, "They have all become citizens of Jerusalem." The people will play flutes and sing, "The source of my life springs from Jerusalem!" Psalm 87:1-7

Meditate. Listen for the sound of the flutes and the singing voices of those from Jerusalem.

Modern day Jerusalem
The City of God

Jerusalem. A beautiful city on a hill—on several hills. Ancient and modern. Shared by people from many nations, ideologies, and religions, including Jewish, Christianity, and Islam. It is the beloved city of God, established by Him, and blessed by Him. In our focus scripture today, the Psalmist reveals that… Everyone enjoys the rights of citizenship there…although some translations identify only those who were actually born there as “citizens” of Jerusalem. No matter. Jerusalem is home…and a pilgrimage home…to millions of visitors every year, according to several websites. It is a popular tourist destination, even amid the threats of war. It is an awesome privilege to stand at the Western Wall—the Wailing Wall—and offer up prayers to our living God. He hears our prayers…no matter where we are when we pray, but it is especially heartfelt to be praying to God in His city. Jerusalem, the city of God.

Verse of Salvation ~ [Isaiah’s prayer for Jerusalem] Because I love Zion, I will not keep still. Because my heart yearns for Jerusalem, I cannot remain silent. I will not stop praying for her until her righteousness shines like the dawn, and her salvation blazes like a burning torch. Isaiah 62:1

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart's desires. Psalm 37:4
