How Do You Show Grief?

Stop. Breathe. Meditate.
Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship. Job 1:20

How do you show grief…how do you respond to that situation that makes you overwhelmed with sadness? Do you cry…softy or wail loudly? Do you merely have a sad countenance? Do you wear black clothes—simple, possibly unfashionable? Do you stop eating or overeat? Do you draw away from others, secluding yourself? Do you cling to particular family or friends who share your grief? Do you lash out in anger or abusive language or physical activity? Do you want to run…to run away?

Camels in Israel near the Judean desert.
Job lost his camels, his oxen...and his precious children.
Job, in the focus Scripture for today, tore his clothes and shaved his head after hearing that his oxen and camels had been stolen, but worst of all, his children had all died when a storm caused the roof to fall on the house in which they all were having dinner. All was lost. How devastating. But then Job praised the Lord. The Lord given and takes away’ blessed be the name of the Lord. What a devout man!

Below are some examples from Scripture on how Job, his friends and David and others dealt with grief in the Bible.
When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. Job 2:12

My vision is blurred by grief; my eyes are worn out because of all my enemies. Psalm 6:7

I am dying from grief; my years are shortened by sadness. Sin has drained my strength; I am wasting away from within. Psalm 31:10

I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. Psalm 38:6

Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. James 4:9

And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out, "How terrible, how terrible for that great city! The shipowners became wealthy by transporting her great wealth on the seas. In a single moment it is all gone."
Revelation 18:19

What do you do to express grief? Will it make any difference if you see how others handle their grief…and you can make a plan for days ahead that you know you will have to deal with grief?

Prayer ~ Lord God, With Christ as my witness, I speak with utter truthfulness. My conscience and the Holy Spirit confirm it. My heart is filled with bitter sorrow and unending grief for the Jewish people. I would be willing to be forever cursed--cut off from Christ!--if that would save them.  From Romans 9:1-3. I pray that their eyes would be open to seeing Christ as their Messiah…soon.

Verse of Salvation ~ We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus." - Acts 15:11. Believe in Jesus as your savior, confess your sin and receive forgiveness.
