Then
they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. Matthew 26:30
Old Olive Trees at the Garden of Gethsemane Jerusalem |
Usually we sing unto the Lord…but here is an example of
Jesus actually singing. It is presumed that they sang the Hallel, Psalm 115-118
as that is traditionally sung at Passover. After the Passover Meal that Jesus
celebrated with His disciples (see Matthew 26:17-30) He and His disciples, except
for Judas Iscariot, went to the Garden of Gethsemane near the Mount of Olives.
The Hallel honors
God. Here are a few verses from those passages.
- Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for
your unfailing love and faithfulness. Psalm 115:1
- I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.
Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath! Psalm
116:1-2
- Praise the LORD, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the
earth. For he loves us with unfailing love; the LORD's faithfulness endures
forever. Praise the LORD! Psalm 117:1-2
- Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures
forever. ... You are my God, and I will praise you! You are my God, and I will
exalt you! Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.
Psalm 118:1, 28-29
Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
Other verses in the Hallel proclaim the righteousness, compassion, graciousness
and power of God and give us insight of Jesus as the cornerstone. The stone which
the builders rejected has become the chief corner stone (Psalm 118:22).
Additionally—the verses joyfully sing praise to the Lord…This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice in it (Psalm
118:24). I will continually sing praises to the Lord for every day is His
day…and I worship His glorious being—all powerful and loving. What would you
sing to Jesus today? Is He your Lord and Savior?
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are my Lord and
Savior and I lift Your name on high…and sing praises…not just about You, but to
You. It must have been with mixed feelings that You sang the Hallel with Your
disciples as You went to the Mount of Olives. You knew what lay ahead—Your betrayal
and sacrificial death…but You went anyway. Thank You. I praise You for Your
obedience.
