Jesus went into the synagogue again and
noticed a man with a deformed hand. Since it was the Sabbath, Jesus' enemies
watched him closely. If he healed the man's hand, they planned to accuse him of
working on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the deformed hand, "Come
and stand in front of everyone." Then he turned to his critics and asked,
"Does the law permit good deeds on the Sabbath, or is it a day for doing
evil? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it?" But they wouldn't
answer him. He looked around at them angrily and was deeply saddened by
their hard hearts. Then he said to the man, "Hold out your hand." So
the man held out his hand, and it was restored! Mark 3:1-5
Fear and anger seem to be closely related emotions.
The synonyms for fear include: terror, dread, anxiety, horror, distress,
fright, panic, alarm, trepidation, and apprehension. Can you think of any
situation in which Jesus expressed these emotions? Anger is powerful and more
encompassing than just fear. I don’t think that Jesus “feared” the Pharisees…but
He certainly did express anger towards them because they were hard-hearted. In
this passage above the Pharisees—considered His enemies—were once again trying
to trick Jesus. He was angry with them for their hard hearts and legalistic
ways. They were so bent on tripping Him up that they couldn’t even have the
common courtesy to answer His question. Jesus showed His mercy towards that man
with the withered hand.
Do you sometimes feel like you only see in red...so angry? |
Anger…and fear…are not specifically
mentioned in the Ten Commandments, but here in this passage below Jesus
explains that feelings…emotions…are as strong as actions that would result in a
separation from God. Anger is as devastating as murder. When a person is angry
their mouth is likely to get them into trouble with God. Speaking of someone as
an idiot or cursing at them is the same as murder…and is subject to the same
punishment.
"You have heard that our ancestors were
told, 'You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.'
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to
judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought
before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of
hell. Matthew 5:21-22
Watch your mouth—for from it is the power
to curse or to bless. Now there is something to fear…our own tongues.
Prayer
~ Jesus, who will not fear you, Lord, and glorify your name? For You alone are
holy. All nations will come and worship before You, for Your righteous deeds
have been revealed." Revelation 15:4. I praise You. Continue to fill me
with Your love, knowledge and wisdom that would bubble over from my life into
others.
