Craving A Sip

There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. John 4:7-8 NASB

Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, "I am thirsty." A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips. John 19:28-29

Have you ever been so hungry that you were weak…or so parched with thirst that you just couldn’t go on? That is the craving that Jesus felt. Craving food and water. Of course people crave other things, too. Fresh air…sunshine…a good book…a visit with a favorite friend or family member…a shopping trip…a sports event…or a vacation to some special place. The list could go on and on. There are all kinds of things that people “crave” but I think we have to be careful about how deep within our heart that longing or desire is and for what it is that we are yearning. Watch out. Where is the line between just wanting something and being so obsessed with it that we covet it? Remember one of the Ten Commandments is…"You must not covet your neighbor's house. You must not covet your neighbor's wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor." Exodus 20:17. Jesus was not coveting water or food when He was hungry or thirsty. I think those were just normal human emotions of craving…of wanting to satisfy His appetite. Once again we see Jesus as being human…and having human emotions.

Please give me water.
Ultimately Jesus provided living water to that woman at the well and wasn’t hungry for the food the disciples brought Him.
Jesus replied, "Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life." ... The woman said, "I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." Then Jesus told her, "I AM the Messiah!" ... Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, "Rabbi, eat something." But Jesus replied, "I have a kind of food you know nothing about." "Did someone bring him food while we were gone?" the disciples asked each other. Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, who sent me, and from finishing his work. You know the saying, 'Four months between planting and harvest.' But I say, wake up and look around. The fields are already ripe for harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!" John 4:13-14, 25-26, 31-36
Are you willing to accept the living water…of eternal life that Jesus offers? Can you do as Jesus said…wake up and look around. He was saying for us to look at those around us…the harvest is people brought to eternal life. What are you doing…planting or reaping for the Lord? Can you put this “reaping” into your priority list…your Do List? What can you do today for the Lord’s harvest?

Prayer ~ Lord please give us wisdom and vision to see and understand the work that You want us to do for Your harvest. Give us a craving and show us how to be efficient with our time and energy in serving You.
