Boredom or Just Weary

Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. John 4:5-6

Bored? Could Jesus ever felt the emotion of boredom? He felt all human emotions right!? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary boredom is the state of being weary and restless through lack of interest. Jesus was certainly weary on many occasions. Consider the when He spoke with the woman at the well—He was tired…weary. I’ve personally found that boredom and weariness are related—actually interrelated. The more bored I am…the more weary I become…and the more bone tired I feel…the more likely I am to feel bored. Have you ever felt that same relationship?

In the study by Cowen and Keltner at the University of California, Berkeley, Self-report captures 27 distinct categories of emotion bridged by continuous gradients, they describe mathematically neighboring emotions. The emotions are distinctly separate, but there is an interrelationship between some emotions. For boredom the closest neighboring emotion was awe. Mathematically that may be of interest, but when a person is bored awe and interest seem to be the opposite. Boredom seems to be related to annoyance. Now there is an emotion that Jesus obviously felt when He was confronted by the Pharisees. Jesus was no fool when it came to responding to those wiley, shrewd, and plotting Pharisees.
Fools show their annoyance at once, but the prudent overlook an insult. Proverbs 12:16 NIV
Come rest under this tree.
Somewhere in Israel.
When Jesus was speaking to His followers in what is known now as the Sermon on the Mount He addressed the righteousness of the Pharisees, who considered themselves to be very pure and holy.
But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven! Matthew 5:20
The Pharisees may have continually annoyed Jesus—but they provided lessons in true righteousness and the way that God wants us to live. Jesus could easily have become bored with the Pharisees continual nagging at Him…but He always turned it into a lesson for someone. Are we listening to those lessons today? Are you searching for a lifestyle and attitudes that please God? I am.

Jesus had the answer for weariness.

Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29

Prayer ~ Jesus, Thank You for continuing to give us lessons by which to live. To live and not be bored. There are too many facets to life that should keep us in awe…and not let us slip into boredom, but then that is a human emotion…and we are human. May we rejoice in all that You have done for us and anticipate the day of Your return.
