Will I Have a Job or Work in Heaven?

Growing sunflowers in heaven--
will that bring honor to the Lord?

Prayer – Lord, will I be cooking or gardening…or maybe painting or writing when I get to heaven. Whatever You choose for me to do to serve You, I’m willing to do it to the best of my ability.

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle, the true place of worship that was built by the Lord and not by human hands. And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: "Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain." But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises. Hebrews 8:1-6

Meditate. Consider God’s guidance in scripture. Read God’s word and listen to what He is saying.

What is your inheritance here on earth? Do you have to work for it?

We are going to receive a very special inheritance from God for free, if we believe in Jesus as His Son…and faithfully develop a relationship with Him. That inheritance is eternal life—and a home in heaven. We will be given the opportunity to serve Jesus in His ministry in Heaven and on Earth. In the book of Daniel there is a passage that talks about what God’s holy people will be given. Those “holy” people are those who seek God, the Most High, and live faithfully according to His will. We will serve and obey God. God’s Kingdom that will last forever is heaven.

Then the sovereignty, power, and greatness of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the holy people of the Most High. His kingdom will last forever, and all rulers will serve and obey him. Daniel 7:27

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him…. 1 Timothy 1:12

Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. 1 Peter 5:2

It seems that God has work for us to do here on earth…and in His eternal Kingdom. Caring for others and working at whatever we do as if we are serving the Lord Himself will be our “job” in Heaven as it is on Earth.

I need to be a little better at that working to serve others as if serving the Lord. Sometimes from my kitchen we have a bit of burnt offerings at breakfast, since I have a couple of burners that are just a bit too hot. If I’m not super watchful, the peppers for an omelet, the potatoes and the bacon might get burned! But my kind hubby never complains! I’m trying to “work willingly” as if I were working for the Lord, but would I serve burned potatoes to Jesus Himself? Maybe I won’t get kitchen duty in Heaven—or maybe the range top won’t have sensitive burners! It certainly won’t be the Lake of Fire.

What job would you like to do in Heaven?

Verse of Salvation ~ Dear friends, you always followed my instructions when I was with you. And now that I am away, it is even more important. Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:12-13
