Teach Your Children

Prayer ~ Lord God, open our eyes and hearts that we would clearly see the way, the truth, and the life that You provide for us… and not be deceived. Help us to demonstrate and “teach” the children near us the importance of a close relationship with You.

But be careful. Don't let your heart be deceived so that you turn away from the LORD and serve and worship other gods. If you do, the LORD's anger will burn against you. He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain, and the ground will fail to produce its harvests. Then you will quickly die in that good land the LORD is giving you. So commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these words of mine. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors. Deuteronomy 11:16-21

Meditate. Reflect on what you teach the children around you.

The Lord has told us throughout the Old and New Testaments not to be deceived. Yet, we blindly close our eyes and naively seek entertainment and other amusements that take us away from the Lord—from God’s way and truth. We teach by actions as well as words…so be careful what you do and say around children. It is amazing what children pick up just from conversations they overhear. Remember that old TV show, “Kids Say the Darndest Things” where children were interviewed about what they had seen and heard? It was a really old program—but it brought out a truth about how kids are sponges, learning and repeating what they see and hear.

In this scripture passage Moses was teaching the children of Israel to obey the commandments that God had given them. Talk about them…not others. Post them on your walls or near your door of your house…not other trivial saying. God wants to be first in our lives. As our Creator, our Lord, and our Savior He deserves that honor. Teach your children to honor God.

Verses of Salvation ~ Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the LORD's miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea. Even so, he saved them--to defend the honor of his name and to demonstrate his mighty power. He commanded the Red Sea to dry up. He led Israel across the sea as if it were a desert. So he rescued them from their enemies and redeemed them from their foes. Psalm 106:7-10

Memory Verse of the Week ~ Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:6

Happy Birthday, Lydia
