Prayer ~ Lord, show us more of You today. Meditate on believing without seeing.
"My Lord and my God!" Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, "You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me." John 20:28-29
Do you have to see something to believe it is real…or going to happen? It used to be that parents didn’t know the gender of their baby until it was born. Even an educated guess by a trusted and wise doctor was still a guess. When my parents were expecting me, Mom’s doctor told her that I was going to be a boy. Perfect they thought since they already had a precious, sweet little girl. Well, I surprised them by being a girl. That was probably a little humbling for that doctor. Now with ultrasound being so common, the gender of the baby is almost routinely known long before the delivery date. Of course, there are still occasional surprises, but generally, seeing is believing.
Can you think of other occasions where
seeing has been believing for you? Only in the book of John we have a record of
a Gentile government official who believed Jesus could do a miracle.
As he (Jesus) traveled through Galilee, he
came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government
official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick. When he heard that Jesus
had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum
to heal his son, who was about to die. Jesus asked, "Will you never
believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?" The official
pleaded, "Lord, please come now before my little boy dies." Then
Jesus told him, "Go back home. Your son will live!" And the man
believed what Jesus said and started home. While the man was on his way, some
of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well. John
4:46-51
Another time Jesus was confronted by
Pharisees who wouldn’t believe in Him without seeing Him perform an extraordinary
sign, a miracle. But they didn’t really believe that He could do that.
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had
arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded
that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. When he
heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why do these people
keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this
generation any such sign." Mark 8:11-12
Even His brothers didn’t believe in Him.
After this (teaching in Capernaum), Jesus
traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish
leaders were plotting his death. But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival
of Shelters, and Jesus' brothers said to him, "Leave here and go to Judea,
where your followers can see your miracles! You can't become famous if you hide
like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the
world!" For even his brothers didn't believe in him. John 7:1-5
Can you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior without seeing Him face to face? When every eye sees Him…it will be too late to decide if He really is the Messiah or not. Don’t wait for that day to make your decision or to trust Him to do a miracle in your life.
Prayer
~ Dear Jesus, I repented and now trust that You have forgiven me for my sin. I believe in You
as my Lord and Savior. I look forward to the day that I will see You face to
face...just as You have promised.
