Salt - Tasty

From The Sermon on the Mount...
You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. Matthew 5:13

The Great Salt Lake - a source of US salt
Salt is a know preservative ingredient--a well as an important ingredient to enhance favors and season foods. It is a basic staple throughout history--before and during Jesus time and even today. Can you imagine food without salt? No salt your chips? Well, there are a lot of herbs and spices that can provide flavor to meats, vegetables and pastries, but without salt bread won't rise correctly. Salt is definitely important. Jesus is reminding His disciples and the crowd following Him that they're to stick to His principles--not to stray away. By staying in the Word we stay "salty" but if we lose our devotion to Jesus--not follow His teachings--then we lose our flavor...our saltiness. We will be of no use to Him. Stay salty.

Jesus didn't appear to be quoting any Old Testament scripture in this portion of the Sermon on the Mount. Salt use is described in the Temple offerings and incense instructions.
     - Using the usual techniques of the incense maker, blend the spices together and sprinkle them with salt to produce a pure and holy incense. Exodus 30:35
     - Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of God's eternal covenant. Never forget to add salt to your grain offerings. Leviticus 2:13 (NLT)

If God considers His followers the salt of the earth are you providing "flavor" to those around you? Where do you get that "flavor"? Once again...from God Himself--from Jesus' teachings--His Word.

Prayer ~ Lord God, help me to be salt of the earth for You. Give me grace to gently live--not just speak--Your Words and follow Your way.
