Who is Mentoring You?

Prayer – Lord, I want to know You more day by day…and I need someone to encourage me to be on the right path…the path of righteousness—right living

The LORD is my shepherd;

I have all that I need.

He lets me rest in green meadows;

he leads me beside peaceful streams.

He renews my strength.

He guides me along right paths,

bringing honor to his name.

Even when I walk

through the darkest valley,

I will not be afraid,

for you are close beside me.

Your rod and your staff

protect and comfort me.

You prepare a feast for me

in the presence of my enemies.

You honor me by anointing my head with oil.

My cup overflows with blessings.

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me

all the days of my life,

and I will live in the house of the LORD

forever. Psalm 23:1-6

Who is a mentor? According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a mentor is a trusted counselor or guide. A mentor can be a coach, a teacher, or a shepherd. A Shepard—like Jesus our Savior! He is our mentor… but like so many things in life, we need a person in person to help us see truths and advise us. Someone to guide us in those paths of righteousness— the right path according to this translation of Psalm 23.

How do you find a mentor? Look around you in your church or social circles for someone you respect who is obviously more mature in Christian values and ideals. They don’t necessarily have to attend your church. You can even have more than one mentor. It is possible to find this mentor in a social media and connect with them virtually, but in person is the best approach.

When do you need a mentor—or how often should you meet?  That depends on you—and your schedules. How important is this “mentoring” to you? How much do you desire to grow? Once a week or a couple times a month? Are you going to do lunch and get to know each other? Will you do a Bible study together? To focus on spiritual growth, that is a good place to start. A wise gentleman with whom I worked once told me that it is good to sit at the foot of a fountain of wisdom—meaning that we need to soak up as much of that wisdom as possible. We should all have a mentor and be a mentor.

What is your plan—your choice for seeking out a mentor? Be brave and find the person who can guide you along the right path.

Verse of Salvation ~ Teach me how to live, O LORD. Lead me along the right path, for my enemies are waiting for me. Psalm 27:11
