Discipleship

Prayer – Lord, You trained Your disciples. Please give us wisdom, insight…and courage to teach or train new disciples—new followers of You.

Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

 Meditate. Consider discipleship.

What does it mean to be a disciple? A student—one who follows the teaching of a particular teacher. Generally, people want to learn. Maybe they just desire to know about their favorite sports teams, about the intricacies of their current hobby or video game pastime, or just maybe, they want to know more about Jesus. Do you want to know more about our Savior? Who discipled or mentored you? Are you willing and able to teach new disciples to obey all the commands I (Jesus) have given you? Willing to teach?

Not everyone is a natural born teacher, but if they know the material—and with the help of the Holy Spirit—anything can be taught. Read the gospels for yourself and note all of Jesus’ directives. Then be careful what you teach. You don’t want to be labeled as a false teacher. Paul warned about that.

I declare today that I have been faithful. If anyone suffers eternal death, it’s not my fault, for I didn’t shrink from declaring all that God wants you to know. So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood—over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders. I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock. Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following. Acts 20:26-29

Who are you disciplining or mentoring? Discipling others is fulfilling Jesus final command—go and make disciples. What is your choice—to obey Jesus or not?

Verse of Salvation ~ Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. 1 Timothy 4:16
