Want to Be Wise?

Prayer – Lord Jesus, I do want to be wise. Fill me with Your wisdom and may the Holy Spirit guide me with Your understanding that I would wisely use Your wisdom to know You and draw others to You.

Job speaking to his friend:

For they all know that my disaster has come from the hand of the LORD. For the life of every living thing is in his hand, and the breath of every human being. The ear tests the words it hears just as the mouth distinguishes between foods. Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old. But true wisdom and power are found in God; counsel and understanding are his. Job 12:9-13

Meditate. Consider wisdom.

It takes wisdom and knowledge
to build a bridge.

Vertical and Horizontal forces make it functional.
Want to be wise? Know God. And if you know God, you’ll develop a relationship with Him. That is just what He wants. That is why He created mankind. We are relational. Most importantly we need a vertical relationship—a connection with God. Then as we are told over and over in the Bible, we need to love one another—forming a horizontal association with other people. Vertical. Horizontal. That is just like we see in the construction of bridges. Build a bridge to God…and a bridge to other people. What else is important to you? Nothing is more important that God. He wants to be first in our lives…and Jesus taught that we are to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33) and also to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40). That sums up what God expects of us. Just as Job said…true wisdom and power are found in God; counsel and understanding are his.

We aren’t to put money, or career, home, or even family before God. That may be a real challenge for some people.  So, I challenge you to put God first every day for twenty-one days. That’s the length of time it takes to change a habit. No better habit that to put God first in your life. Begin today, and finish on February 5th.

What exactually will you do to “put God first” on a daily basis? It might be easy to put God first on Sunday and go to church, but what about the other days of the week? Lots of things vie for your attention—work, school, meal preparation, childcare, laundry, cleaning, meetings, appointments, hobbies, or just that need for down-time and the desire to watch TV or read a good book. Is that “good book” the Bible? Now that would be putting God first. We need to evaluate everything we do to see if we are including God in our life…or just putting Him on hold. Do you ask Him every morning, “What can I do for You today, Lord?” Continue to seek Him and ask for wisdom. Get to know Him through His wisdom. Remember Job’s advice…true wisdom is found in God. Paul wrote…

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. James 1:5

Do you want to be wise? Just ask and use that wisdom to know the source...God.

Verses of Salvation ~ I waited patiently for the LORD to help me, and he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD. Oh, the joys of those who trust the LORD, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. ... But may all who search for you be filled with joy and gladness in you. May those who love your salvation repeatedly shout, "The LORD is great!" Psalm 40:1-4, 16
