What is the Best Gift You’ve Been Given?

Prayer ~ Lord God, thank you for the greatest gift that You have ever given mankind…Jesus. I understand that it is only by Your grace that I can and have been saved—nothing I can do on my own—no good works—will give me eternal life. I can’t take credit for anything—it is Your grace and mercy that saved me. Thank you—for Your great plan of salvation.

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9

Meditate. Feel God’s presence, His grace, and His mercy.

What is the best gift...
you've been given?
What is the best gift you’ve ever been given? Maybe you think it was the bike you got for your birthday when you were seven? Or was it the diamond bracelet for Christmas when you’d always gotten cleaning tools the years before? The best gift I ever received was Jesus as my Savior. I just didn’t immediately understand the depth of that gift—but this verse explains it so well. Here is another verse that confirms this gift from God that we are privileged to receive.

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

Believe. Make the most of this best gift that you’ve been given by sharing this good news about salvation with others.

Verses of Salvation ~ "Listen to me, you who know right from wrong, you who cherish my law in your hearts. Do not be afraid of people's scorn, nor fear their insults. For the moth will devour them as it devours clothing. The worm will eat at them as it eats wool. But my righteousness will last forever. My salvation will continue from generation to generation." Isaiah 51:7-8

Memory Verse of the Week ~ God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. Ephesians 2:8-9

Show Respect for the Aged

Prayer ~ Lord God, just as You taught the Israelites, You want us to respect our elders. With age comes more responsibility…and then less and less…until the aged are cast-off or set aside. Show me creative ways to honor the elderly I know…and those I don’t know…who are still living. They are worthy of my respect…and it won’t be long until I am there, too. Above all, I love and respect You, Lord, and as You are eternal—ageless—You are worthy of all praise and honor.

Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:32

Meditate. At what age is someone “elderly”?

I wanted to focus this year on our relationship—God and me—as I’m getting older. What does God expect of me…of others…as we age and become “the elderly” and live to honor Him? How does society view older people and do they know that God requires people to show respect for the aged? Yes. That statement was among the laws that the Lord gave to Moses for the Israelites. Can we live up to that? I’ve mentioned before that I know several ladies who are or have already turned 96 this year. Amazing ladies. I can only hope that when I reach their age that I still fear God, that I get around as well as they do, live in my own home, and have a sense of humor like they do! Well…that last one remains to be seen in me at my young age. Ha! I respect each of those ladies…and love them dearly. God has blessed these ladies…and their family and friends. He is the eternally awesome One! Are you showing respect for God…and respect for the aged?

Verse of Salvation ~ Look up to the skies above, and gaze down on the earth below. For the skies will disappear like smoke, and the earth will wear out like a piece of clothing. The people of the earth will die like flies, but my salvation lasts forever. My righteous rule will never end! Isaiah 51:6

Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting!

Prayer ~ I praise You, Lord! I confess that I have not always lived up to Your expectations—but I know that if I confess my sin, You will forgive me. Thank you for Your loving mercy and grace in my life. I praise You—for You are worthy of praise.

Israel failed to destroy the nations in the land, as the LORD had commanded them. Instead, they mingled among the pagans and adopted their evil customs. They worshiped their idols, which led to their downfall. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters. By sacrificing them to the idols of Canaan, they polluted the land with murder. They defiled themselves by their evil deeds, and their love of idols was adultery in the LORD's sight. That is why the LORD's anger burned against his people, and he abhorred his own special possession. He handed them over to pagan nations, and they were ruled by those who hated them. Their enemies crushed them and brought them under their cruel power. Again and again he rescued them, but they chose to rebel against him, and they were finally destroyed by their sin. Even so, he pitied them in their distress and listened to their cries. He remembered his covenant with them and relented because of his unfailing love. He even caused their captors to treat them with kindness. Save us, O LORD our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice and praise you. Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting! Let all the people say, "Amen!" Praise the LORD! Psalm 106:34-48

Meditate.

Are you mean and rebellious...
...like this wicked, little alligator?
He is just taunting you into thinking he is cute.

God rescued His people over and over. Do we see Him doing the same for us—not necessarily in the same way with pagan nations—but rescuing us from ourselves, from our bad decisions? Are we rebellious like those Israelites? In what way do you see yourself rebelling or willfully sinning? If we confess our sin….

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts. 1 John 1:8-10

It is a crazy world out there. The one thing that we can trust is God. He is faithful and just—pouring out His love and mercy on us. He wants to have a good relationship with us. Praise the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives from everlasting to everlasting!

Verse of Salvation ~ Save us, O LORD our God! Gather us back from among the nations, so we can thank your holy name and rejoice and praise you. Psalm 106:47

Memory Verse of the Week ~ For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.  Romans 3:23

A Life Worthy of the Lord’s Calling

Prayer ~ Lord, I do feel that I’ve been called by You…called to be part of Your family—and so blessed by that. Paul called the Ephesians to be worthy of their calling. How can I do that? By being humble and patient? I am certainly unworthy—but very willing to serve You in any way I can. I feel that this blog is an opportunity to reach others for You—open doors and hearts for others to seek and know You. May they praise and worship You, praying continually—as Paul taught and I strive to do. You are worthy to be praised, honored, and adored.

Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all. However, he has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ. That is why the Scriptures say, "When he ascended to the heights, he led a crowd of captives and gave gifts to his people." Notice that it says "he ascended." This clearly means that Christ also descended to our lowly world. And the same one who descended is the one who ascended higher than all the heavens, so that he might fill the entire universe with himself. Ephesians 4:1-10

Meditate. What does it mean to be “called?”

God is continually calling us through His word—to seek Him—and to know Him. In this passage, Paul was telling the Ephesians…and us…that we have been called to a glorious hope for the future. I think that hope is our eternal life in Christ. Interestingly, Paul points out that Christ descended from Heaven. He did indeed exist in Heaven with God the Father before He came to our lowly earth as a baby. Then after His death on the cross—for our sins—and His resurrection, He ascended…in Paul’s description… higher than all the heavens, so that He might fill the entire universe with Himself. Fill the entire universe—that is such a vast area. Jesus Christ is in control of all of creation. What a powerful position!

For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father, who is over all and in all and living through all. One…body, Spirit, hope, Lord, faith, baptism, God and Father. ONE. Each of those stands alone. One. One, yet they are intertwined. The Spirit and God the Father are ONE with Jesus Christ. It is a difficult concept for some people to get their heads around, but it is by faith that we can accept that fact. It is by faith and baptism that we declare that we are ONE with God. Believing in God as your spiritual Father, your Savior, and your comforter or sustainer is the biggest step anyone takes in their life. That is a calling that gives hope. Personally, I have hope. Hope for today and an even brighter hope for tomorrow…and forever. Do you have hope? Have you been called into a life filled with God’s glorious hope?

Verse of Salvation ~ My mercy and justice are coming soon. My salvation is on the way. My strong arm will bring justice to the nations. All distant lands will look to me and wait in hope for my powerful arm. Isaiah 51:5

Memory Verse of the Week ~ For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.  Romans 3:23

Is Everything Meaningless?

Prayer ~ Lord, please show me what is really meaningful in life.

"Everything is meaningless," says the Teacher, "completely meaningless." Keep this in mind: The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them. The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly. The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful. Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd drives the sheep. But, my child, let me give you some further advice: Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out. That's the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone's duty. God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad. Ecclesiastes 12:8-14

Meditate. What is the meaning of life…of fearing God?

Solomon concluded that we should fear God and obey his commands. It is about the same thing that Jesus said.

I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father's commandments and remain in his love. John 15:9-10

To fear God is to respect or love Him. We do that by obeying Him—doing what He has commanded us to do. Once again that is simply to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. Love is the key.

God will ultimately judge us for everything we do. Whether others see what we do or not…God see it.

So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you. James 2:12-13

James is writing about the same judgment that Solomon wrote about—but at a different angle. Be merciful. Being merciful is showing love—to others and to God. If we are merciful to God’s creation—other people created in His image—then James is telling us that God will be merciful to us. Isn’t that what we all want in life? Love and mercy. I’d say that gives meaning to our lives. Do you think, like Solomon, that everything is meaningless?

Is Life Pleasant? Remember Your Creator

Prayer ~ Lord God, I have lived a good, pleasant life because of Your love, care, and protection. Strengthen my body—and I ask the same for my family and friends as we are getting older and weaker. Thank you for the wisdom You’ve given us—help us to apply it and use it to teach others and glorify You.

First Robin of 2022
January 16, 2022 - my yard
An early chirping bird--looking for a worm.

Don't let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, "Life is not pleasant anymore." Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky. Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop.  Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly. Remember him before the door to life's opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades. Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint. Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire. Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral. Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken. Don't wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:1-7

Meditate. Dust returns to the earth.

Interesting how Solomon describes body parts and functions. As we age most people get cataracts and floaters in their eyes so that their eyes get dark and cloudy, as a woman looking through a cloudy window. Shoulders, once strong like he-men, become stooped and we get weaker. Then there are our legs which just don’t always seem to be strong and agile anymore. Have you gotten down on the floor and tried to get up lately? Hmmm. It is not as easy as it once was for me. My hair is white—but my yellowing teeth are capped, broken and at least one has been pulled. I know others who have had several abscessed teeth pulled and those left behind are falling over a bit. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the importance of dental health. Keep your teeth healthy and your body will be healthy! Good to start living by that mantra early in life. How are your ears? Do you hear those chirping birds and your grandchildren laughing?

God had a great design when He created mankind—and it is still good. It is best if we honor Him by taking care of our bodies. No matter what…we all came from dust and we will return to dust.

By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return. Genesis 3:19

So, before you get old and weak consider what the Lord our God has done for you, physically and spiritually.

  •         What has God been doing in your life this week?
  •         How do you see Him working?

It is a good thing to contemplate your relationship with the Lord daily. Life is pleasant now…in many ways. Don’t wait until you are on your death bed to respect, admire, exalt, adore, and pay tribute to the Lord. Honor God now. Remember your Creator.

Verses of Salvation ~ As for us, we can't help but thank God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation—a salvation that came through the Spirit who makes you holy and through your belief in the truth. He called you to salvation when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. With all these things in mind, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm and keep a strong grip on the teaching we passed on to you both in person and by letter. Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal comfort and a wonderful hope, comfort you and strengthen you in every good thing you do and say. 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

Look Up

Prayer ~ Lord God, I am looking up—patiently watching and waiting for You. Someone recently said that if everyone were evangelizing more that the Rapture would have happened because the last Gentile would have been saved. I think You have Your own timetable—and only You, Heavenly Father, know the hour and the day that Jesus Christ will return for the believers. I realize that people are expecting Jesus to come for “the church” but it will not be “the church” that will be rapture, but only the believers. Open the eyes of those people “playing church” and thinking that if they go to church on Sunday…and are good all week that they are part of “the church,” they will be raptured. What an eye-opener they have in store! Unless they “believe” in You Jesus as their Savior, they will NOT be saved or raptured. I am grateful to know that I believe in You Jesus…as the Son of God, as God, and as my living Lord and Savior.

"Teacher," they asked, "when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?" He replied, "Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah,' and saying, 'The time has come!' But don't believe them. And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don't panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won't follow immediately." Then he added, "Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from heaven. But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. So don't worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you, for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you! ... And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!" Luke 21:7-15, 25-28

Meditate. Where are you looking?

Salvation - like the promise of the rainbow.
It may be nearer than you think.
Look up!
I love this…look up, for your salvation is near! Lately, I’ve been watching people, especially as they walk down the street. Most people are looking at their feet…looking down. Don’t they realize that by leaning over so much they are setting their bodies off balance? Our heads are the heaviest part of our bodies and by leaning over, we are setting ourselves up to go tumbling forward, falling. Dangerous way to walk. Do these people think that they have to look at their feet to walk right? I was born pigeon-toed with both feet pointed inward. When I started walking my doctor and parents put me in corrective shoes—I think with braces for a short time. Then I always wore clunky, supportive shoes—not pretty little Mary Jane shoes. I looked at my feet a lot…to make sure I was walking right—toes pointed forward. That was probably the beginning of my poor posture. Ha! Now, I try to focus every day on looking up. Are there clouds in the sky? Is today the day of Jesus’ return for the believers? Look up. Are you ready? It might just be the time of Salvation.

Verse of Salvation ~ I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:1-8

Do You Fall Short of God’s Glorious Standards? You Can Be Forgiven.

Prayer ~ Lord, I know that I am a sinner. I humbly stand before you and am once again thankful for Your mercy and forgiveness. You are an awesome God. Now can You count me among the righteous?

But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners. Romans 4:5

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.  Romans 3:23

Meditate. Where do you stand with the Lord? Do you fall short of God's glorious standards? Are you willing to ask for forgiveness?

Do you think you have never sinned? Only Jesus was perfect and never sinned.

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. 1 Peter 3:18

God has standards. He gave Moses the Ten Commandment and over six hundred rules for living—lots having to do with dietary laws and living unadulterated lives (read Deuteronomy 4-31). God had a plan to keep His people pure and over the years they were the ones who survived plagues when washing your hands was important—just like now. Everyone knows the importance of washing hands currently, but that wasn’t always the case. It wasn’t a sin not to wash your hands…but it provided physical salvation for the Jews.

Jesus provided spiritual salvation as He died on the cross, was buried, and resurrected. For all those who believe in Him, there will be a resurrection. Have you heard that everyone will have eternal life? Only those who believe in Jesus Christ will have a heavenly resurrection—others will be banned to hell and a lake of fire.

"But now, as to whether there will be a resurrection of the dead--haven't you ever read about this in the Scriptures? Long after Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob had died, God said, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' So he is the God of the living, not the dead." When the crowds heard him, they were astounded at his teaching. Matthew 22:31-33

And if our hope in Christ is only for this life, we are more to be pitied than anyone in the world. But in fact, Christ has been raised from the dead. He is the first of a great harvest of all who have died. So you see, just as death came into the world through a man, now the resurrection from the dead has begun through another man. Just as everyone dies because we all belong to Adam, everyone who belongs to Christ will be given new life. But there is an order to this resurrection: Christ was raised as the first of the harvest; then all who belong to Christ will be raised when he comes back. After that the end will come, when he will turn the Kingdom over to God the Father, having destroyed every ruler and authority and power. For Christ must reign until he humbles all his enemies beneath his feet. And the last enemy to be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:19-26

Graves at the Mount of Olives
Israel
Everyone sins. Everyone dies. Everyone will be resurrected. What you believe will make the difference as to just where you end up for eternity. Are you seeking God and His glorious standards for your life? We all fall short—but we can be forgiven. Just ask.

Verses of Salvation ~ All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance--an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 1 Peter 1:3-6
