Consider these words from Job. Meditate.
Who is the Almighty, and why should we obey
him? What good will it do us to pray? Job 21:15
Job was responding to comments from his
friends and making some interesting observations of mankind, particularly
wicked people.
Why do the wicked prosper, growing old and
powerful? They live to see their children grow up and settle down, and they
enjoy their grandchildren. Their homes are safe from every fear, and God does
not punish them. ... They spend their days in prosperity, then go down to the
grave in peace. And yet they say to God, 'Go away. We want no part of you and
your ways.' Job 21:7-9, 13-14
It is these wicked people, not Job, who are
wondering…Who is the Almighty, and why
should we obey him? What good will it do us to pray? They are so caught up
in their good lives, their prosperity, that they don’t see the need for God. It
is like the Israelites about 100 years after they returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the Temple; then they became not only backslidden, they were just plain arrogant.
Model of the Temple rebuilt in Jerusalem. |
"You have said terrible things about
me," says the LORD. "But you say, 'What do you mean? What have we
said against you?' "You have said, 'What's the use of serving God? What
have we gained by obeying his commands or by trying to show the LORD of
Heaven's Armies that we are sorry for our sins?'
Malachi 3:13-14
Malachi rebuked the people for rejecting
the Lord and called them to repentance. We need to be careful that we don’t get
complacent and turn away from the Lord. Many of our lives are like those Jews
in Jerusalem that—going well so that we might not feel the need for the Lord.
We can be self-sufficient…not needing any help from anyone. Do you feel that
way? Do you feel the need to pray…to connect with God?
With the isolation due
to the COVID-19 crisis we may be at either extreme…needing God…or rejecting
Him? Where do you stand? We all NEED God. He is the source of our forever
future. Seek Him with all your heart.
Prayer
~ Lord, I see that prayer is important. It is my connection to You.
