Think about
those early believers. What did they do? Meditate on this Scripture.
All
the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship,
and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. Acts 2:42
Devoted to prayer. Jesus was devoted to
prayer. Consider for whom, when, where, and for how long He prayed. Here are a
few examples:
-
One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay
his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for
bothering him. Matthew 19:13
-
So they rolled the stone aside. Then Jesus looked up to heaven and
said, "Father, thank you for hearing me. You always hear me, but I said it
out loud for the sake of all these people standing here, so that they will
believe you sent me." John 11:41-42
-
Before daybreak the next morning, Jesus got up and went out to an
isolated place to pray. Mark 1:35
-
One day soon afterward Jesus went up on a mountain to pray, and he
prayed to God all night. Luke 6:12
-
They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, "Sit
here while I go and pray." Mark 14:32
-
One day Jesus left the crowds to pray alone. Only his disciples were
with him, and he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" Luke 9:18
-
About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a
mountain to pray.
Luke 9:28
-
Jesus said, "This is how you should pray: "Father, may your
name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. Luke 11:2
-
One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always
pray and never give up. Luke 18:1
-
At that time Jesus prayed this prayer: "O Father, Lord of heaven
and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves
wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike. Yes, Father, it
pleased you to do it this way!” Matthew 11:25-26
-
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who
will never leave you. John 14:16
Gate into the Garden of Gethsemane Jerusalem |
Jesus prayed for children, His friends and
for us. He prayed early in the morning…and all night. He often prayed alone, or
with friends nearby, in gardens or on mountains. He taught others how to pray
leaving us with an model so that if we are struggling with what to say, we are
assured that Jesus there is a pattern for us. He was thankful and considerate.
He knew the ultimate plan was for Him to go away…back to Heaven…and for the
Holy Spirit to come. He asked for that.
What do we learn from this? Jesus was our
example—we should pray as He did…wherever and whenever…always. Do you find it
hard to pray…or to find the time to pray?
Prayer
~ Thank You, Jesus, for being a living example and for teaching us how to pray. Continue
to guide us that our prayers would be as a sweet aroma to You and to the
Father.
