As you enter the house of God, keep your ears
open and your mouth shut. It is evil to make mindless offerings to God. Ecclesiastes 5:1
Is there a spiritual component to
Alzeheimer’s? And what would be a spiritual component of a mindless or failing
mind? Mindlessness. There is always a spiritual component in everyone’s life. Everyone
has eternal life…either with God or without Him. Solomon wrote that it is evil to make mindless offerings to God. Our “offering” to God is worship. Just believing in Jesus as God…as the Son of
God and our Savior… brings one to an eternal spiritual salvation. As long as a
person is cognitively aware of their decision, then it is not a mindless
offering or mindless decision. Once a person has a level of dementia that doesn’t
allow them to make rational decisions, then we can only hope that they have
already chosen to choose Jesus as their Savior.
I’ve known several wonderful Christians
with dementia…one of whom was specifically diagnosed with Alzeheimer’s. Their
disease progressed as expected with failing memory, loss of body control and
eventually the inability to talk, walk, eat, bath or dress themselves. Life
seemed like it became meaningless…but where there is life, there is always some
degree of hope. Hope that even for an instant the Alzeheimer’s patient would
recognize their family members. Hope that even though they cannot communicate,
they can hear their loved ones and know what is going on around them. Is their
life is mindless—or just it just appear that way? At one time they had a great
relationship with God as well as with their family and friends. Life, including
spiritual life, goes on until it is over.
Prayer
~ Dear Lord, in Peter’s second letter he wrote that he tried to stimulate their
wholesome thinking and refresh their memory. 2 Peter 3:1. Please be merciful
and refresh our memories to focus on You.
