Meditate.
Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but are yourself lost or destroyed? If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels." Luke 9:23-26
Jesus was speaking to a crowd and His
disciples. His message was clear and He had so much to say in these few verses.
It is also found in Matthew 16:24-27.
Turn from your selfish ways. It is our
natural tendency to be selfish, to put ourselves first. Just as it is when we were
little children, the world revolves around “me” and I know best, whatever that
is. Paul, using Jesus teaching, reminded early Christians and us:
Don't be selfish; don't try to impress
others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Philippians
2:3
Take up your cross daily. We have to
again, lay aside our selfish ambitions and self-centered goals and do things
Jesus’ way. Deny yourself and carry your burdens—as your cross. Jesus has
told us that He will bear our burdens
with us…so even as we carry our cross, He is yoked with us. l
Follow Jesus. That should be our goal in
life.
Give up your life.
Don’t be ashamed
of Jesus. If anyone is ashamed of me and
my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person…. Also in Mark 8:38.
Paul reminded the church at Rome about
this.
For I am not ashamed of this Good News about
Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes--the Jew
first and also the Gentile. Romans 1:16
It is so very important that we not be ashamed of Jesus and the Gospel message. There can be no shame, no turning our backs, no selfish ambition if we want to be accepted by Jesus and ultimately by our Heavenly Father. Without our acceptance of Christ and His of us, we have no hope of eternal life in Heaven. Everyone will live eternally—in only one of two places…Heaven or Hell. What good is it for us to hang on to our life, if we gain the whole world, but are ultimately lost or destroyed. My hope is in the Lord…is yours?
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, I want to be your follower. I turn from my selfish ways and take up my cross today…and every day to follow you.
Verse of Salvation ~ Let God's curse fall on anyone, including us or even an angel from heaven, who preaches a different kind of Good News than the one we preached to you. I say again what we have said before: If anyone preaches any other Good News than the one you welcomed, let that person be cursed. Obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ's servant. Galatians 1:8-10

Feast at the King’s Table
Looking for a tasty and nutritious pie to serve to your family? This egg custard pie is so good and it provides protein for a boost to the nutrition of any meal. I’d even serve this for breakfast! This recipe was from my Mom’s Legion Auxiliary group who compiled a collection of recipes in the 1950’s, perhaps as a fund raising project.
