As the Israelites were about to leave Egypt
with Moses, they were given the instructions for the first Passover and there
was fear of death. The Passover protected the Israelites from death—but the
Egyptians lost their first born and ultimately they were afraid that God would
kill them all.
So the people of Israel did just as the LORD
had commanded through Moses and Aaron. And that night at midnight, the LORD
struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son
of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the
dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. Pharaoh and all his
officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud
wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. There was not a single house
where someone had not died. Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night.
"Get out!" he ordered. "Leave my people—and take the rest of the
Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you have requested. Take your
flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you
leave." All the Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the
land as quickly as possible, for they thought, "We will all die!"
Exodus 12:28-33
Crossing the Red Sea Lego Creation by Isaac |
Get
out! Pharaoh declared, but then he asked to be blessed. He knew—he learned—that
there was protection in God’s blessing. Is that what we ask? Bless me…or we will all die. Consider what happened
to Pharaoh’s men at the Red Sea. Splish. Splash. Driving their chariots they
followed the Israelites into the Red Sea.
Pharaoh's chariots and army he has hurled
into the sea. The finest of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea.
Exodus 15:4
Do we ever blindly follow or chase others
into what we think is safe dry ground? The Israelites experienced safety as they
crossed the Red Sea, but the Egyptians were blindsided…and they drowned. They
did die. Their fears were realized.
How will our lives end? Will there be fear
at the end? Will we see those waves crashing over us like the Egyptians in the
chariots?
Prayer
~ Lord, I place my trust in You—that You will guide me, my family and friends
safely through whatever lies ahead of us—whether it is the Red Sea or just
resting in Your presence with mercy, grace and love.
