Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord,
I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since Thou
hast spoken to Thy servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”
And the Lord said to him, “Who has made
man’s mouth? Or who make him dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the
Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth and teach you what
you are to say.” Exodus 4:10-12 NASB
Moses had just been called to go rescue the
Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. Moses saw the burning bush and heard
the voice of God. Imagine that. Remove
your sandals for you are standing on holy ground. Exodus 3:5. Moses
actually spoke to the Lord. A conversation with God—but Moses was not confident
in himself and had a lot to learn at that point about the power of God. Don’t
send me—I’m not much at talking. I’m not eloquent—not much with a quick retort
that would be needed when speaking with the Pharaoh. Eloquence is a big word
for a man who stuttered and had no confidence in himself—or in Yahweh, the LORD
God Almighty.
Do you ever find yourself at loss for
words? We must do as God told Moses. Go and trust Him—that He will teach us
what we are to say. As Jesus sent His disciples out to heal the sick, raise the
dead, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons, He said…But when they deliver you up (to courts and government officials), do not become anxious about how or what
you will speak; for it shall be given you in that hour what you are to speak.
For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of your Father who speaks in
you. Matthew 10:19-20.
Additionally, in His apocalyptic discourse,
Jesus said, “It will lead to an opportunity
for your testimony. So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend
yourselves; for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your
opponents will be able to resist or refute.” Luke 21:13-15.
Peter taught…
But
even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And
do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, but sanctify Christ as
Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks
you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and
reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are
slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
1 Peter 3:14-16.
Have Hope. Trust God. Ask Him to give you
the words to say…especially when you are speaking to others about Him.
Prayer
~ Lord, give me the words to say…and the opportunity to speak to others about
You…and Your love for them.
