Can Do Attitude

Memory Verse:
For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13

The Lord is the light of my life giving me strength.
Through Him I can do all things.
Verse in context.
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me--everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn't have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Even so, you have done well to share with me in my present difficulty. Philippians 4:8-14

Are you content with whatever you have? Do you rely on Christ to help you…to give you strength? Do you have a can do attitude? I do…only through the strength of the Lord!

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus Christ, I thank You, for giving me strength to do Your work. You have considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve You. From 1 Timothy 1:12. Thank You for Your love and mercy on my life. Please continue to guide and direct me as I seek to know you more and serve You with all of my heart, soul mind and strength.

Again I Say--Rejoice

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

Review this memory verse. Have you captured it? Rejoice if you have!
Always
be full of joy
in the Lord.
I say it again
—rejoice!
Philippians 4:4

Review-Review-Review.
Write it out.

Does this little alligator look joyful?
He certainly has a big smile!
Rejoice with him.
Alligator at Bee City, Cottageville, SC.
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4
Can you ever have too much happiness, delight, pleasure, elation, thrill, gladness, delight, and wonder? That is joy. The Bible is filled with joyful verses. Even if you don't feel joyful...rejoice anyway. Seek God and His word—He will give you the joy you need in your life.

Always be joyful. 1 Thessalonians 5:16
How joyful are those who fear the LORD—all who follow his ways! Psalm 128:1
Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. Proverbs 3:13

Prayer ~ Jesus, continue to fill me with Your love, knowledge and wisdom that would bubble over from my life into others. Full of joy! May my dear brothers and sisters in the Lord be joyful, grow to maturity, encourage each other, live in harmony and peace, for then the God of love, You Lord Jesus, will be with them. From 2 Corinthians 13:11.

Rejoice

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

Rejoice! What more joy filled word is there than rejoice?

What is the Delight of Your Heart?
The LORD your God will delight in you if you obey his voice and keep the commands and decrees written in this Book of Instruction, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and soul. Deuteronomy 30:10

For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs." Zephaniah 3:17

Trees planted on a river bank (canal). Israel.
Meditate on that…on God’s commandments and directives.
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. But not the wicked! They are like worthless chaff, scattered by the wind. They will be condemned at the time of judgment. Sinners will have no place among the godly. For the LORD watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction. Psalm 1:1-6

I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart." Psalm 40:8 NASB
One of the most precious, encouraging and comforting verses I have found to share with others talks about God’s promise to give people the desires of their heart.
Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 NASB
Is joy the desire of your heart? Do you think that would have been a desire in Jesus’ heart?

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus, I am excited daily as I eagerly anticipate Your presence in my life, Your healing touch, and Your return to take Your church to Your heavenly home. Thank You.

Say It Again

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

I say it again…. It is a phrase found several times in the Bible. Say it again. Whatever has been said is worth repeating. Say it again. Jesus and Paul repeated their teachings.
I'll say it again—it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!" Matthew 19:24

I'll say it again. If you are trying to find favor with God by being circumcised, you must obey every regulation in the whole law of Moses. Galatians 5:3

For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. Philippians 3:18

In this verse…Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice…consider what is worth repeating. In this verse…joy. Be full of joy in the Lord. Joyful. God created joy for a reason…to give people a happy feeling. He wants us to be full of His joy…to rejoice. Always.

Choices? Choose joy.

Prayer ~ Lord God, I say it again… fill us with Your joy…overflowing. Pure joy that was created by You and infused into our lives by Your very presence. Joy unexplainable and full of mercy.

Daily Bible Reading: Jeremiah 32-34

Joy in the Lord

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

…be full of joy in the Lord.
JOY! Joy is happiness, delight, pleasure, elation, thrill, gladness, delight, and wonder. There it is. Jesus felt JOY! He says my joy. He wants us to be full of joy!
I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! John 15:11
He wanted the disciples and us to have His joy. Not only just basic full of joy…but joy overflowing! That is a human emotion that everyone feels at some time in their lives. Jesus did, too.

Joyful fruit waiting to be picked.
Be filled with joy!
Look at this passage a little more in the context of where, when, and to whom He was speaking. He and His disciples were in the Upper Room and they had just finished the Passover Meal. Jesus was giving those disciples His last pep talk…His last lecture…His last teachings. What He said during the first three years of His ministry was so important…and He was reminding them of His love for them and the importance of obedience. Be loving, obedient and overflowing with joy.
"Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father. I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father's commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. John 15:5-12

In Isaiah 5 there is a parable of a vineyard where Israel is depicted as the vineyard and it produces evil fruit. Here Jesus is telling the disciples that those who live the way He has taught them will produce fruit…good fruit. Consider the Fruits of the Spirit…
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23.
Those were the “fruits” for which Jesus was looking. He was trying to encourage those in His disciples and in us. Note that “joy” is in that list. He wants all His followers to have that overflowing joy. Paul encourages the Romans with this same joy…as well as hope and peace.
I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13.
David wrote about joy that comes from obedience to the Lord. That is the joy that Jesus wants us to have. Because of obedient, loving actions as the result of pure, undefiled hearts seeking holiness, we will be filled with His joy.
-         The commandments of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are clear, giving insight for living. Psalm 19:8
-        So rejoice in the LORD and be glad, all you who obey him! Shout for joy, all you whose hearts are pure! Psalm 32:11
How is your heart today? Filled with joy? Overflowing? Have you found joy in your life? Has your life brought joy to others? What could be keeping you from this joy? Give it to the Lord.

Prayer ~ Lord – May the desires of our hearts bring You delight. Fill us with Your joy…overflowing to those around us.

Always is Forever

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

Always….
Not just sometime…not just occasionally…but ALWAYS. Can we do that? Always—constantly—is  a big commitment. There are 239 verses in the Bible (NLT) that contain the word always. That is a lot of continually doing something. It is forever. We can look forward to an eternity…always. Jesus spoke using that term always and so did the Apostle Paul.
One day Jesus said to his disciples, "There will always be temptations to sin, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting! Luke 17:1

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. Luke 18:1

But Jesus replied, "My Father is always working, and so am I." John 5:17

Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything. 2 Corinthians 6:10

Always is a long time.
Is there time without the sun?
Always…have temptation. Always pray. Always working. Always have joy. What great teaching messages from Jesus and from Paul to the Christians in Philippi and Corinth. We should never give up. Remember that word…always.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God. I will always rejoice in Your love and presence in my life. Thank You for Your direction, teaching and caring compassion.

Be Full of Joy

Memory Verse:
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice!  Philippians 4:4

This verse is a really short one…but it provides us with some great direction and a healthy reminder. Joy. It is the key to a content, happy, and Christ centered life. Look at the verse in context…
Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
Choose Joy...like an overflowing fountain.
Be full of joy in the Lord.
Fountain at Duncan Gardens.
Spokane, Washington
Personally, I claim that promise that I will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.  Peace is one element of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Another part of that fruit is joy. I think that we can choose to be full of joy in the Lord…to rejoice...or we can choose to isolate ourselves in darkness, be grumpy and be sad. God allows us freedom of choice. Choose wisely. Some Old Testament wisdom about being joyful…
The life of the godly is full of light and joy, but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out. Proverbs 13:9

Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. Psalm 119:1-2
Jesus is the light of the world.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life." John 8:12
I close this devotional today with these last words just as Paul wrote… Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other. Live in harmony and peace. Then the God of love and peace will be with you. 2 Corinthians 13:11.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vines; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in You, LORD! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation! You, Sovereign LORD, are my strength! You make me as surefooted as a deer, able to tread upon the heights. Habakkuk 3:17-19. I seek You and Your peace and joy in my life.

Motives with Honor

Memory Verse:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Mosaic of Wine Stomping
A Good Harvest
Israel
Repeat – Review…three times out loud and writing.
Honor the LORD
with your wealth
and with the best part of everything you produce.
Then he will fill your barns with grain,
and your vats will overflow with good wine.
Proverbs 3:9-10

Do you feel that you are honoring the Lord with your best? Do you think your best thoughts with Him in mind…do you say kind, uplifting things that show you are a person with integrity…do you do things that reflect Jesus’ character helping the widows, orphans, those down and out and acting as the Good Samaritan? What motivates you? Is it your love for the Lord or the promise of reward?

Prayer ~ Lord, please give us wisdom and vision to see and understand the work that You want us to do for Your harvest. Reveal to us our true motivation in life. May we bring glory and  honor to you.

Are Your Barns Full?

Memory Verse:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.
Prosperity promise. If you do this…honor the Lord…then He will bless you. Some people have made a ministry of that promise and duped a lot of people via television ministry. Faith healers and the like. There is power in the Lord—that is where power originates. It is there alright—I believe in the power of God—to bless, heal and protect. Get money—your wealth—involved and people show their true values. I know people who have turned their backs on the church and on God because the church demanded that they tithe…or at least give a certain amount. If you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength—you love God. You don’t walk away from Him. Life if funny—but people who turn their backs on God won’t be laughing when the chips are down and the church is rising to heaven.
Grain storage near Rosalia, Washington

It is harvest time—lots of granaries are full. Farmers are working overtime. That is what farmers do during harvest time. When the grain and the fruits are ripe they have to work quickly and long hours to bring their crops into their storage warehouses and get them to market. Long days. Up at dawn and working into the night. I admire farmers’ stamina. Those who were affected by the flooding in the Midwest states are looking at barns that aren’t quite full this year. Their ground may be still flooded or soggy and they couldn’t grow any crops. Did they honor God with their wealth when they had good years? How will God’s promise sustain them? It is easy to see that the flooding and the farming situation could economically and physically impact our nation and our world. Here’s the point we have to trust the Lord.

Prayer ~ Lord, we put our trust in You that You would direct our paths in life as promised in Proverbs 3:5-6. Open our eyes and hearts that we would see and understand what Your will is for us today. Help the farmers and each of us to make good decisions…and to honor you in all that we do.

Give the Best Part

Memory Verse:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

…with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.
Everything we have comes from the Lord. Everything.
The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. Psalm 24:1
Almost time to harvest grapes...in my yard.
Harvest them first for the Lord?
With that in mind, as we tithe or give…we are just giving back to the Lord what is rightfully His.
One-tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD and must be set apart to him as holy. Leviticus 27:30
Go beyond just possessions. All our time, energy…everything is from the Lord. Can we honor God by giving back a portion to Him?

Prayer ~ Lord God, Just as Ezra wrote about David singing to the Lord, I worship and honor You. “Give to the LORD the glory he deserves! Bring your offering and come into his presence. Worship the LORD in all his holy splendor.” 1 Chronicles 16:29

Honor the Lord

Memory Verse:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Honor the Lord. There are 71 verses in the New Living Translation using the words “Honor the Lord.” Honor is associated with heaviness in Biblical translations. It is also translated as giving glory or making someone honorable.
Honor the LORD for the glory of his name. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. Psalm 29:2.

Glorify the Lord. Give Him honor and respect. Can you imagine the splendor and majesty of God? He is Holy and worth of our honor.

Prayer ~ Jesus, Thank You for continuing to give us lessons by which to live. There are so many facets to life that keep us in awe. May we continually honor You and rejoice in all that You have done for us as we anticipate the day of Your return.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
Tomatillos are one of the coolest looking vegetables growing in the garden. Their green papery skins are intriguing and make you wonder just what is hiding inside. It looks similar to a tomato—but it is not. What is it… how do you eat it…what does it taste like…what do you do with it? I’ve found that tomatillos don’t taste like tomatoes. They have a sort of lemony taste and are crunchy when raw. One way to eat them is in Chili Verde – a pork or beef stew with nopalitos cactus leaves, or you can chop them up into a green salsa. Enjoy exploring more of God’s great creations as you feast on tasty tomatillos.

Tomatillo Salsa - Makes about 1 cup
8 tomatillos, peeled, stewed
2 scallions, halved
½ jalapeño pepper, halved, seeded, more or less to taste
1 garlic clove, peeled
1 teaspoon lime juice
½ cup fresh cilantro
½ teaspoon salt

Place all ingredients into a blender container and fasten the lid tightly.
Turn machine on and slowly increase speed. Blend for 15 seconds or just until chopped. If necessary, use tamper to push the ingredients into the blades while processing. Do not liquefy, just chop finely.

Serve as a dip or as an accompaniment with tacos, burritos or enchiladas.

Never Forget

Memory Verse:
Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. Proverbs 3:9-10

Wisdom...stored in your heart.
Written on a mezuzah to post by your door.
Proverbs is such a collection of wisdom fragments, but there is something to be gained by considering this scripture in context. It especially reminds us to memorize…to store these commands in our hearts. We consider the mind where we “store” information—but contemplate that the heart is where we “treasure” things. We need to “treasure” God’s word for as Jesus said… “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21.

My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones. Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine. My child, don't reject the LORD's discipline, and don't be upset when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:1-12.
The promise given to us in the Proverbs passage is one that we need to approach with care. Don’t be greedy. Make sure your motives for storing up God’s commandments, as well as giving tithes and offerings, are pure and ethical. God will bless people if they give from their heart—not necessarily because they give LOTS. Remember the example that Jesus used teaching His disciples in the temple of the woman who gave only two pennies—but that was all she had. Don’t you think that Jesus blessed her—even though that is not recorded in scripture?

Never forget. Always remember what not only Solomon taught in Proverbs, but what Jesus taught in the Gospels. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Giving to the Lord…honoring Him with your wealth is a way of sharing with your neighbor. Don’t let loyalty and kindness leave you. Be loyal to the Lord by sharing that which He has so richly blessed you.

Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure. Psalm 119:162. Please continue to give me the wisdom and understanding I treasure as You reveal Your Word. May all that I think, say and do honor You.

Try Again – How’s Your Attitude?

Memory Verse:
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28

One more try at memorization. Repeat this three times out loud.
And we know that
God causes everything to work together
for the good of those
who love God
and are called
according to his purpose for them.
Romans 8:28

Do you love God? Can you claim this verse and apply it to your life? Can you see what God has done to cause everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for you? Can you tell someone what God has done?

My greatest God siting—giving me an opportunity to tell you what God has done for me lately—is a change in my attitude. I’ve been grumpy and out of sorts lately and although I find myself blaming it on anxiety associated with medication that I took several months ago for a viral bronchitis, it is really just poor choices. I can choose to be happy, content, and satisfied with myself as days go by and I’m getting older…or I can choose to be unhappy, bitter and discontented with life. Moment by moment the choices add up…and can create dissatisfaction. No escaping into the latest TV binge watching can take away that poor attitude with the cloud of disappointment and dissatisfaction that hovers over my head. But God is good. He has given me hope—and a contentment that repeatedly reminds me that He loves me…enough to care about my daily unmet expectations in such a way that those seemingly minuscule disappointments don’t become overwhelming disasters that could drive me into days of depression. I had to write this to totally see God in action. Yep. God is good. He has created hope and joy in my life.

Prayer ~ Lord God, we know that You cause everything to work together for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose for them. Romans 8:28. Keep on working in our lives…and thank you for my attitude adjustment.
