Memory Verse:
Honor
the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.
Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with good
wine. Proverbs
3:9-10
Wisdom...stored in your heart. Written on a mezuzah to post by your door. |
Proverbs is
such a collection of wisdom fragments, but there is something to be gained by considering
this scripture in context. It especially reminds us to memorize…to store these
commands in our hearts. We consider the mind where we “store” information—but contemplate
that the heart is where we “treasure” things. We need to “treasure” God’s word
for as Jesus said… “Wherever your
treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21.
My child, never forget the things I have taught you.
Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and
your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie
them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then
you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good
reputation. Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to
take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn
away from evil. Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your
bones. Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything
you produce. Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will
overflow with good wine. My child, don't reject the LORD's discipline, and
don't be upset when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just
as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:1-12.
The promise
given to us in the Proverbs passage is one that we need to approach with care.
Don’t be greedy. Make sure your motives for storing up God’s commandments, as
well as giving tithes and offerings, are pure and ethical. God will bless
people if they give from their heart—not necessarily because they give LOTS.
Remember the example that Jesus used teaching His disciples in the temple of
the woman who gave only two pennies—but that was all she had. Don’t you think
that Jesus blessed her—even though that is not recorded in scripture?
Never forget. Always remember what not only Solomon taught in Proverbs, but what
Jesus taught in the Gospels. Love God and love your neighbor as yourself.
Giving to the Lord…honoring Him with your wealth is a way of sharing with your
neighbor. Don’t let loyalty and kindness
leave you. Be loyal to the Lord by sharing that which He has so richly blessed
you.
Prayer
~ Lord Jesus, I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure. Psalm
119:162. Please continue to give me the wisdom and understanding I treasure as
You reveal Your Word. May all that I think, say and do honor You.
