Do You Fear God?

Dear friends, don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot do any more to you after that. But I'll tell you whom to fear. Fear God, who has the power to kill you and then throw you into hell. Yes, he's the one to fear. What is the price of five sparrows—two copper coins? Yet God does not forget a single one of them. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows. Luke 12:4-7

Meditate on your value to God.

Are you shaking in your boots?
Do you fear God or respect Him?

Do you fear God? Not the “shaking in your boots” fear…but the type of fear that is respect. Awe. Reverence. I think something is lost in translations and culturally. When we think of fear, we think of something lurking in the dark, ready to pounce and attack us. Is that from too many terror-filled dramas that we watch on Netflix? Or even from reading some mystery novel? Fear of God is wholesome. It is found in 68 verses in the New Living Translation. It began with Abraham and his willingness to sacrifice Isaac to the Lord. Obedience was the key. Reverently willing to obey.

Jesus tells His friends—His disciples and the thousands who were listening to Him—Fear God. If you respect Him and obey His commands, then He will value you—and not throw you into hell. Well, we shouldn’t live in fear of being thrown into hell—but it is a reality for those who intentionally refuse to believe in Jesus and choose to honor Satan instead. Why do that when you can know God, honor Him, and realize that He highly values you? He knows all about you—even the number of hairs on your head, which may be less today than yesterday! He still knows and cares.

What do you learn about Jesus from this scripture passage today?

Prayer – Lord God, thank You for caring about me. I am honored that You find value in me—who am I that You would love me enough to make me part of Your family?

Verse of Salvation ~ Though the LORD is very great and lives in heaven, he will make Jerusalem his home of justice and righteousness. In that day he will be your sure foundation, providing a rich store of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the LORD will be your treasure. Isaiah 33:5-6

Happy Birthday, Evelyn
