Prayer – Lord, my ears are open and I love to study Your word…and learn more about You. Reveal Yourself to me through Your stories—for they are life, truth, and love.
O my people, listen to my instructions. Open your
ears to what I am saying, for I will speak to you in a parable. I will teach
you hidden lessons from our past stories we have heard and known, stories our
ancestors handed down to us. We will not hide these truths from our children;
we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the LORD, about
his power and his mighty wonders. Psalm 78:1-4 (Read all of Psalm 78.)
Meditate. Look for hidden lessons.
Jesus taught in parables and one time His disciples asked
Him about that teaching technique.
He replied,
"You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven, but
others are not. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be
given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not
listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from
them. That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don't really
see. They hear, but they don't really listen or understand. Matthew
13:11-13
Our Psalmist today tells us that these parables are stories
from the past that we will hand down to our children…and probably to our
grandchildren. Those stories that teach us about God’s power and almighty miracles.
I think it is good to have those stories…and to hear them retold. As we see God
working in our lives, we can relate what we are experiencing with accounts of
God’s influence in previous generations.
This scripture printed above in only a few verses from seventy-two
verses that describe people either searching for, finding, or rejecting God from
the time of Jacob to David. It’s a good review of God’s power and majesty—and mostly
about the people’s rebellion and rejection of God. Read the whole chapter…and
then reflect on the details of God’s desires for those He knows and loves. What
does He want for you…and how are you responding to His love?
Verses of Salvation ~ As for us, we can't help but thank
God for you, dear brothers and sisters loved by the Lord. We are always
thankful that God chose you to be among the first to experience salvation—a salvation that came through the Spirit who
makes you holy and through your belief in the truth. He called you to salvation
when we told you the Good News; now you can share in the glory of our Lord
Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14
Memory Verse of the Week ~ I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid. John 14:27
