No unfulfilled promises. Did the family of
Israel realize how blessed they were? Remember how they were complaining in the
desert with Moses? Unmet expectations result in complaining, whining and
grumpiness. Do you see that in those around you…family, friends or yourself?
Mt. Hermon, Israel - looking north towards Lebanon |
At the beginning of the book of Joshua,
Moses had died and God chose Joshua to become the Israelites leader. God
promised…I promise you what I promised
Moses: 'Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you—from the
Negev wilderness in the south to the Lebanon mountains in the north, from the
Euphrates River in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west, including all
the land of the Hittites. No one will be able to stand against you as long as
you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or
abandon you. Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these
people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them.'
Joshua 1:3-6. Near the end of Joshua’s life he recounts what God has done for
his people.
So the LORD gave to Israel all the land he
had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled
there. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had solemnly
promised their ancestors. None of their enemies could stand against them, for
the LORD helped them conquer all their enemies. Not a single one of all the
good promises the LORD had given to the family of Israel was left unfulfilled;
everything He had spoken came true. Joshua 21:43-45.
God provided for millions of Israelites
just as He said He would. He promised to never fail or abandon them. They may
have felt as if they were abandoned at times…but God was still with them, even
in times of persecution, tribulation and death. God’s promises are still good
and He gives us what we need. He told Joshua to be strong and courageous. He still expects that of us today. I’m
looking forward to the coming months as we look a closer at the promises that
God made to the Israelites…and to us.
Prayer
~ God, open our eyes to the truth of the promises You made to the Israelites
and to how those still apply today.
