John was known to be devout and honest. His testimony is true. We can
trust it. Truth is found in over 200 verses in the Bible (NASB). One of the
first occurrences is describing God as He gave Moses the Ten Commandments.
The LORD
descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he (Moses) called upon the
name of the LORD. Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed,
"The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and
abounding in lovingkindness and truth; who keeps lovingkindness
for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no
means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the
children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations." Exodus 34:5-7.
The classic truth is Jesus’ statement to Thomas and the other disciples. Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and
the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John
14:6. Jesus is Truth. He talks to Pilate about truth during His trial before
His crucifixion. Therefore Pilate said to
Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly
that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the
world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth
hears My voice." John 18:37. So what is truth? Whatever is true,
correct, honest. It reminds me of one of my favorite passages found in
Philippians. Finally, brethren, whatever
is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever
is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if
anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8. Good
advice for any day. Think on good things.
RSVP: Jesus is encouraging us to think good
thoughts—to think of truth, to think of Him. How will you respond to Him today?
Prayer ~ Jesus, continue to show us
how to live to please You—how to love others as we would love You—showing them
Your truth.
