Salt is important…it preserves food, gives food flavor and in the Bible
it stands for permanence and incorruption.
Every grain
offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that the salt of
the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offering; with
all your offerings you shall offer salt. Leviticus 2:13
All the offerings
of the holy gifts, which the sons of Israel offer to the LORD, I have given to
you and your sons and your daughters with you, as a perpetual allotment. It is
an everlasting covenant of salt before the LORD to you and your descendants with
you. Numbers 18:19
Do you not know
that the LORD God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David and his
sons by a covenant of salt? 2 Chronicles 13:5
Salt is good; but
if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt
in yourselves, and be at peace with one another. Mark 9:50
So if we are the “salt of the earth” how should we give flavor—make life
tasty—spread our joy, contentment, and encouragement in Christ with others?
Let your speech
always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how
you should respond to each person. Colossians 4:6
Jesus was telling the multitude of people listening to Him on that
mountain that they needed to keep their flavor, their zeal for life. We are no
different today. Do we want to be “trampled underfoot?”
RSVP: Jesus
is inviting us today to know that we are to be salt—to give flavor, and to keep
our enthusiasm for life in Him, not to lose our passion or zeal for life. How
will you respond to Him today?
Prayer ~ Jesus, may the words that
I speak today offer encouragement and hope in You to others in a flavorful way.
Please give me grace to treat others with kindness, goodness, gentleness, patience,
peace, joy and love.
