Where is Death’s Victory?

Meditate today and be strong.
Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die, this Scripture will be fulfilled: "Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. 1 Corinthians 15:54-58

Nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless. What do you “do” for the Lord? None of your “works” can get you into heaven. So of what value are “works”…things that you “do”? God does it all. He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ. We can’t obtain victory on our own. We “do” things after we become Christians to serve the Lord. We become doers of the Word—not to get us into heaven, but because we want to help others.
Glace in the mirror.
What do you see?
But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.
James 1:22-27

“Doing” may be teaching others about Jesus so that one day they will go to heaven, too. Or it may be just an act of service…like taking food, clothing, or assistance to someone who is sick, homeless, or grieving. To serve someone is to serve God Himself. One day we will die…and in that death the victory will be for Jesus. He has saved us from eternal damnation…and saved us to an eternity with Him. That is love…no greater love than with the one that gave His life for us…and that even now is seated at the right hand of our Heavenly Father, pleading for mercy on our lives.
My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. 1 John 2:1-2
Jesus has power over the sting of death—and since we belong to Him, if we believe in Him as our Savior, then death has no power over us, not even to wound to our souls. These bodies may die and decay…but we will be given new bodies.
Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. For all creation is waiting eagerly for that future day when God will reveal who his children really are. Against its will, all creation was subjected to God's curse. But with eager hope, the creation looks forward to the day when it will join God's children in glorious freedom from death and decay. For we know that all creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he has promised us.
Romans 8:18-23

Prayer ~ Thank You Lord, we won't be misled—no one can mock the justice of God. People will always harvest what they plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So we will not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. Galatians 6:7-10. Guide us today to do Your will in serving others.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
One of my granddaughters recently celebrated 100 days of school. Some kids have created paper chains while other children count out 100 pennies, 100 Cheerios, 100 jelly beans or other things like Hot Wheel cars. Lydia wanted to make 100 cookies. Here’s a family recipe for 100 Good Cookies.

100 Good Cookies
1 c sugar
1 c brown sugar
1 c butter
1 c vegetable oil
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
3½ c flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
c chopped nuts of your choice, like pecans, walnuts or almonds
1 c oatmeal
1 c coconut
1 c Rice Krispies

Cream together sugars, butter and oil. Add egg and vanilla.
Stir together dry ingredients and add to the sugar mixture.
Add nuts, coconut, oatmeal and then gently add the Rice Krispies, so as not to break them.

Drop by teaspoon on cookie sheets. It does make 100 cookies!
Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. These cookies freeze well.

The best way to freeze cookies is label the bags: LIVER. No one will bother them.

Transformation

Meditate on this Scripture:
But let me reveal to you a wonderful secret. We will not all die, but we will all be transformed! It will happen in a moment, in the blink of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown. For when the trumpet sounds, those who have died will be raised to live forever. And we who are living will also be transformed. For our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. 1 Corinthians 15:51-53

Do you like secrets? Is dying is easy? Is living is hard? I love the way Paul reveals the secret of Gospel to the Corinthians. Those who believe will be transformed. Instantly changed from death to life—eternal life. Are you listening for the trumpet sound? It will be the last trumpet sound. In the book of Isaiah God reveals in prophesy that in the end times all the Israelites will be brought back into their land…one at a time. Then there will be a great trumpet sound.
Yet the time will come when the LORD will gather them together like handpicked grain. One by one he will gather them--from the Euphrates River in the east to the Brook of Egypt in the west. In that day the great trumpet will sound. Many who were dying in exile in Assyria and Egypt will return to Jerusalem to worship the LORD on his holy mountain. Isaiah 27:12-13
Trumpet sound. Instant change. No more dying—just living forever if you believe. Wait. Does that believing include Jews? Jews are God’s chosen people, so I assume they are “included.”

Transformed like the butterfly.
New Life.
We will not all die. Hallelujah. Are you listening for the trumpet and are you ready to be transformed? Actually there will be several trumpets blown. It is that last one that is the secret transforming trumpet.
When the seventh angel blows his trumpet, God's mysterious plan will be fulfilled. It will happen just as he announced it to his servants the prophets.  Revelation 10:7

Prayer ~ Lord, I eagerly wait to hear your shout and the trumpet sound. Let it be, but in Your mercy, I understand that You don’t want anyone to perish.
The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 2 Peter 3:9
For You, Lord, will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. 1 Thessalonians 4:16.
Let it be.

Be Still and Know

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge! A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. God dwells in that city; it cannot be destroyed. From the very break of day, God will protect it. The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God's voice thunders, and the earth melts! The LORD of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Interlude Come, see the glorious works of the LORD: See how he brings destruction upon the world. He causes wars to end throughout the earth. He breaks the bow and snaps the spear; he burns the shields with fire. Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world. The LORD of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. Psalm 46:1-11

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in time of trouble….Be still, and know that I am God! Such reassuring words. God is always there for us. Everyone has a time of trouble…everyone—sometime—somewhere—to some extent. Big problems or just little problems. They still are troubles with which we must cope. But the beauty of it is God is there for us—to help us or just be there. How does one get in touch with God?  Do we have to die to see the Lord?

The calm Sea of Galilee. Be Calm.
Be calm and know that God IS God. He is all powerful, omniscient, omnipresent.
The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm. Exodus 14:14

For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.  Zephaniah 3:17
He will take delight in you. Stay calm…be calm. You will find Him in His Word…read the Bible. Listen. Listen for a still small voice. That could be the Holy Spirit guiding you, but search for those words in His Word. He will give you peace…His peace.

Prayer ~ Dear Lord, as the Israelites were being chased into the Red Sea when they left Egypt, …Moses told the people, "Don't be afraid. Just stand still and watch the LORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm." Exodus 14:13-14. We won’t be afraid—You are always with us. You promised to never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 32:6) and that even the Holy Spirit would never leave us (John 14:16). Thank you for those promises. I will be still and listen for Your voice…as I read Your Word and rest in Your peace and strength. You will be honored throughout the world.

Happy 94st Birthday, Auntie Merc!
May our Lord continue to bless you! Be Still and Know that He IS God!

What If….

Meditate on this lengthy Scripture today:
But suppose that man has a son who grows up to be a robber or murderer and refuses to do what is right. And that son does all the evil things his father would never do—he worships idols on the mountains, commits adultery, oppresses the poor and helpless, steals from debtors by refusing to let them redeem their security, worships idols, commits detestable sins, and lends money at excessive interest. Should such a sinful person live? No! He must die and must take full blame.

But suppose that sinful son, in turn, has a son who sees his father's wickedness and decides against that kind of life. This son refuses to worship idols on the mountains and does not commit adultery. He does not exploit the poor, but instead is fair to debtors and does not rob them. He gives food to the hungry and provides clothes for the needy. He helps the poor, does not lend money at interest, and obeys all my regulations and decrees. Such a person will not die because of his father's sins; he will surely live. But the father will die for his many sins—for being cruel, robbing people, and doing what was clearly wrong among his people.

'What?' you ask. 'Doesn't the child pay for the parent's sins?' No! For if the child does what is just and right and keeps my decrees, that child will surely live. The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent's sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child's sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness. But if wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do what is just and right, they will surely live and not die. All their past sins will be forgotten, and they will live because of the righteous things they have done. Ezekiel 18:10-22

Live or die? What if…?
Do you ever think about…what if I had done such and such…? I do. It is very reassuring that the child doesn’t pay for the parent’s sin, but there is other scripture that elaborates on this concerning those guilty of iniquity, rebellion and sin. The consequences of sin—unrepentant sin—are passed on to the children. Imagine that punishment going on for several generations. That is what God instructed. Is that good motivation to repent? How much do sinners care about the next generation?
I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations. Exodus 34:7
God is certainly merciful to the repentant souls—to those living a righteous life. Love to a thousand generations. If a generation is about thirty years, as Wikipedia suggests, then 30,000 years would be the length of time for God to pour out His enduring love. That is a very long time!

Prayer – Lord God, please forgive me for harboring sin in my heart and life—for my rebellious attitude. Sometimes I just want things…my way. I know that is not right. I need to live Your way. Thank you for forgiveness…and for the mercy that You are showing to even the third and fourth generations of my family. Please continue to bless me, my family, friends and dear neighbors.

Grace – in Life and Death

Meditate on this verse today:
Then the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live, and you will be honored along with him. This is all made possible because of the grace of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ. 2 Thessalonians 1:12

Women's Side Wailing Wall
Jerusalem, Israel
Don't wait until you get to the Wailing Wall to honor God.
Give Him honor and glory where you are today.
God will be honored by how you live…and how you die.
Honored – showing respect, favor, love, righteousness. Does your life reflect righteousness, right living before God? Are the choices you make worthy of His will, His love and respect for you?

Prayer ~ Lord, may the choices I make today bring You glory and honor, through the grace that You give me.

More Fear of Death

As the Israelites were about to leave Egypt with Moses, they were given the instructions for the first Passover and there was fear of death. The Passover protected the Israelites from death—but the Egyptians lost their first born and ultimately they were afraid that God would kill them all.
So the people of Israel did just as the LORD had commanded through Moses and Aaron. And that night at midnight, the LORD struck down all the firstborn sons in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sat on his throne, to the firstborn son of the prisoner in the dungeon. Even the firstborn of their livestock were killed. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the people of Egypt woke up during the night, and loud wailing was heard throughout the land of Egypt. There was not a single house where someone had not died. Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron during the night. "Get out!" he ordered. "Leave my people—and take the rest of the Israelites with you! Go and worship the LORD as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you said, and be gone. Go, but bless me as you leave." All the Egyptians urged the people of Israel to get out of the land as quickly as possible, for they thought, "We will all die!"
Exodus 12:28-33

Crossing the Red Sea
Lego Creation by Isaac
Get out! Pharaoh declared, but then he asked to be blessed. He knew—he learned—that there was protection in God’s blessing. Is that what we ask? Bless me…or we will all die. Consider what happened to Pharaoh’s men at the Red Sea. Splish. Splash. Driving their chariots they followed the Israelites into the Red Sea.
Pharaoh's chariots and army he has hurled into the sea. The finest of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea. Exodus 15:4
Do we ever blindly follow or chase others into what we think is safe dry ground? The Israelites experienced safety as they crossed the Red Sea, but the Egyptians were blindsided…and they drowned. They did die. Their fears were realized.

How will our lives end? Will there be fear at the end? Will we see those waves crashing over us like the Egyptians in the chariots?

Prayer ~ Lord, I place my trust in You—that You will guide me, my family and friends safely through whatever lies ahead of us—whether it is the Red Sea or just resting in Your presence with mercy, grace and love.

What is the Risk?

After Moses received the Ten Commandments, he spoke to the Israelite people who were apparently terrified by being in the presence of God. They wanted Moses as their mediator. Think about their situation and mediate on where you are with God today.

The LORD spoke these words to all of you assembled there at the foot of the mountain. He spoke with a loud voice from the heart of the fire, surrounded by clouds and deep darkness. This was all he said at that time, and he wrote his words on two stone tablets and gave them to me. But when you heard the voice from the heart of the darkness, while the mountain was blazing with fire, all your tribal leaders and elders came to me. They said, 'Look, the LORD our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice from the heart of the fire. Today we have seen that God can speak to us humans, and yet we live! But now, why should we risk death again? If the LORD our God speaks to us again, we will certainly die and be consumed by this awesome fire. Can any living thing hear the voice of the living God from the heart of the fire as we did and yet survive?' Deuteronomy 5:22-26 NLT

Imagine the Israelites standing at the foot of Mt. Sinai with Moses holding two huge stone tables engraved with the Ten Commandments. If you’ve seen the 1956 epic movie “The Ten Commandments” with Charlton Heston, you have the visual in mind. Those people who had been wandering in the desert, led by God and His miracles were afraid to die. Their fear, as expressed here by Moses, was that God would burn them up in His awesome fire. But they had heard the very voice of God. How awesome is that?

How often do we see God working in our lives? It is probably not as dramatic as parting the Red Sea, speaking to us from a burning bush or a fire, or providing manna. God just wants His people to obey His commandments. That is what He wanted from the Israelites and that is what He wants from us. When Jesus was asked which was the greatest commandment, He summarized them into two:
"The most important commandment is this: 'Listen, O Israel! The LORD our God is the one and only LORD. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.' The second is equally important: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' No other commandment is greater than these." Mark 12:29-31
Do those and you will live is the message. Living. Living forever with God. That was what Jesus was teaching. Read the discussion that Moses had with the Israelites (Deuteronomy 4-6) and then the teachings of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and decide for yourself. You can systematically read the Gospels; you don’t have to read them all at once. Is there a risk involved in knowing God, or is there more risk involved in NOT knowing God?

Prayer ~ Lord, open our eyes and hearts to know You more fully. Help us to have a sense of respect, not a fear of punishment or death in knowing You. You are truly a great and awesome God, who we are privileged to know. We love You with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength…help us to love our neighbor as ourselves.

Risk Assessment

Meditate on the risk of love and death.
And why should we ourselves risk our lives hour by hour? For I swear, dear brothers and sisters, that I face death daily. This is as certain as my pride in what Christ Jesus our Lord has done in you. And what value was there in fighting wild beasts--those people of Ephesus--if there will be no resurrection from the dead? And if there is no resurrection, "Let's feast and drink, for tomorrow we die!" Don't be fooled by those who say such things, for "bad company corrupts good character." Think carefully about what is right, and stop sinning. For to your shame I say that some of you don't know God at all. 1 Corinthians 15:30-34

There is a risk in everything, every day. Those “risks” provide us with choices. First thing when I wake up…should I get out of bed? But I might fall on the way to the bathroom…but if I stay in bed, my muscles will begin to atrophy and I’ll lose my strength to even get out of bed. Get up!

There is a risk in knowing and loving God. To choose to not know Him is pure ignorance, but there are those who chose that. To know Him and not love Him is another choice. Paul tells us that we are servants or slaves to whatever, or however we choose to live, by what we obey.
Don't you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. Romans 6:16
Think about it. Are you a slave to food…do you arrange your day by when and what you are going to eat or your next drink? Are you a slave to your TV…do you live to watch particular shows? Are you a slave to God, choosing to seek Him first in your life and obeying His Word?

The choice is simple. The risk is ultimate. Sin leads to death. Eternal death without God. I choose to obey God and look forward to life everlasting after my earthly body dies.

Prayer ~ Lord, my old self has been crucified with You, Christ. It is no longer I who live, but You who live in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in You as the Son of God, who loved me and gave yourself for me. Galatians 2:20.

Friday’s Feast at the King’s Table
As usual every Friday is Feast Day at the King’s Table. We can’t live on just spiritual food …nor can we live on bread alone. This is rainy, soup type weather. Tonight we're having my favorite fish taco soup.

Mick’s Fish Taco Soup
Ingredients for 8 servings:
8 corn tortillas, cut into 1/2 inch strips
Vegetable oil for frying
Kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper and chili powder
2 pounds fish fillets, red snapper or cod is a good choice
¼ tsp cumin powder, or more if desired
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 limes, juiced, plus lime wedges for garnish
1 pablano chili (mild) or serrano chili (if you prefer-hot), chopped
3 cups broth seasoned with ½ tsp thyme, 2 bay leaves, and one clove chopped garlic
6 cups boiling water
1 green onion, sliced, for garnish
4 ripe tomatoes, cut into chunks, for garnish
2 ripe avocados, peeled and cut into chunks, for garnish
Cilantro leaves, for garnish

Directions:
Cut up the fish into pieces about 1” by 2”, sprinkle with cumin, cover with chopped chili pepper, drizzle with the lime juice and olive oil and set aside in the refrigerator to marinate about 15 minutes while you chop the green onion, tomato, and avocado.
For the tortillas: Heat about 1/4-inch vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Cut the tortillas into 1/2-inch wide strips. Fry the tortilla strips in batches and drain them on paper towels; season with salt, pepper and chili powder while they are still hot.
For the soup: Heat the broth, water and seasonings to boil and simmer until the meat and vegetable are in the bowls. Saute the marinated fish over medium heat for a few minutes, using the lime-oil marinate. Cook just until the fish are no longer raw, but not falling apart. Divide the fish equally into eight servings and place each in the bottom of a large soup bowl. Top with some onion, tomato, avocado, and cilantro leaves. Ladle in the hot broth and squeeze in a lime wedge. Top with tortilla strips. Serve and enjoy.

Are You Afraid of Death?

Consider this message to the Church in Smyrna and meditate on it.
Write this letter to the angel of the church in Smyrna. This is the message from the one who is the First and the Last, who was dead but is now alive: I know about your suffering and your poverty--but you are rich! I know the blasphemy of those opposing you. They say they are Jews, but they are not, because their synagogue belongs to Satan. Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. The devil will throw some of you into prison to test you. You will suffer for ten days. But if you remain faithful even when facing death, I will give you the crown of life. Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Whoever is victorious will not be harmed by the second death. Revelation 2:8-11

Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer.  Remain faithful even when facing death. This was the message from Jesus through John to the Christians in Smyrna. The message is the same to us. Hang onto those words: Don't be afraid of what you are about to suffer. Don’t be afraid. No fear. Here are a couple of verses that I have found encouraging and I trust that they give you hope.
The LORD is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me? Psalm 118:6

Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love. 1 John 4:18
No fear when we have the love of the Lord. If our sins are confessed…and thus forgiven…then we should have no fear of punishment. We don’t know what is ahead for us…suffering, loneliness, rejection, pain and surely death, but if God is for me, who can be against me?

What makes a person fearful of death?

Cross at the Holy Family Shrine
Gretna, Nebrasks
Prayer ~ Lord Jesus, You had no fear as You obediently went to the cross, suffered for us, bearing our sins on the cross. You literally died for us. Help us to live without fear of death.

Fire Has Consumed the Wilderness Pastures

Meditate on these sobering verses.
Dress yourselves in burlap and weep, you priests! Wail, you who serve before the altar! Come, spend the night in burlap, you ministers of my God. For there is no grain or wine to offer at the Temple of your God. Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting. Bring the leaders and all the people of the land into the Temple of the LORD your God, and cry out to him there. The day of the LORD is near, the day when destruction comes from the Almighty. How terrible that day will be! Our food disappears before our very eyes. No joyful celebrations are held in the house of our God. The seeds die in the parched ground, and the grain crops fail. The barns stand empty, and granaries are abandoned. How the animals moan with hunger! The herds of cattle wander about confused, because they have no pasture. The flocks of sheep and goats bleat in misery. LORD, help us! The fire has consumed the wilderness pastures, and flames have burned up all the trees. Even the wild animals cry out to you because the streams have dried up, and fire has consumed the wilderness pastures. Joel 1:13-20

This doesn’t exactly give us a joyful picture of the future as predicted by Joel. The day of the LORD is near, the day when destruction comes from the Almighty. How terrible that day will be!  The day of the Lord is the time we are waiting for…the time when Christ returns. But will we have to go through all the hardships, desolation, hunger and destruction that are described here? We don’t have a promise that we will be spared, but we do have God’s promise that He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5). That is what I hang onto daily, knowing that if I live long enough there will be tribulations and there will be salvation. Jesus has not forgotten us…He is just waiting for the right time—when everything is ready for His return. Even now there is mourning—no joy. People in Australia are experiencing fires consuming wilderness pastures...and the wild animals that have survived those fires are surely crying out. Food has disappeared right before the eyes of those people there.

Read on in Joel. There is a promise of deliverance in Joel 2 for God’s people. That appears to be special for those in Israel…the sons of Zion. God’s people will surely be blessed. He promises to make up for the years that the locust swarmed their land and ate their crops. Keep reading. When the end is near, God is merciful.

The Spirit of the Lord
Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike. And I will cause wonders in the heavens and on the earth—blood and fire and columns of smoke. The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and terrible day of the LORD arrives. But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, for some on Mount Zion in Jerusalem will escape, just as the LORD has said. These will be among the survivors whom the LORD has called. Joel 2:28-32
Hang onto that promise that God will pour out my Spirit upon all people…and… everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved. All people. That is encouraging.

Are you calling on the name of the Lord?

Prayer ~ Lord, I am continually seeking You…and calling on Your name. Deliver me, my family and friends from the destruction and devastation that is predicted for this world. We wait with You for the promised right time and trust that You will never leave us or forsake us.

What Do We Need To Do To Be Ready?

Meditate on this Scripture today…and be ready.
Keep your lamp burning.
Clay pot lamp - Israel
Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning, as though you were waiting for your master to return from the wedding feast. Then you will be ready to open the door and let him in the moment he arrives and knocks. The servants who are ready and waiting for his return will be rewarded. I tell you the truth, he himself will seat them, put on an apron, and serve them as they sit and eat! He may come in the middle of the night or just before dawn. But whenever he comes, he will reward the servants who are ready. Luke 12:35-38

What do we need to be ready?
  •       Be sure of your salvation – Repentance/Faith - "The time promised by God has come at last!" he announced. "The Kingdom of God is near! Repent of your sins and believe the Good News!"   Mark 1:15
Seeing their faith, He said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven you." Luke 5:20
  • Be holy - But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.    1 Peter 1:15
  • Share Jesus with others…"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 NASB
  • Be a servant - And the Lord replied, "A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them. If the master returns and finds that the servant has done a good job, there will be a reward. Luke 12:42-43
  • Then watch for signs…Jesus told them, "Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah.' They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don't panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. ... "Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. ... Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near. Matthew 24:4-7, 9-13, 28

Prayer ~ Lord, I eagerly await Your return. Sometimes I feel that maybe my faith is not strong enough…that You won’t accept me because I’ve some unrepentant sin that I don’t even realize. Please forgive me. I doubt that I am good enough. Help my unbelief.

Someday There Will Be Deep Mourning

Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near. Immediately after the anguish of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will give no light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then at last, the sign that the Son of Man is coming will appear in the heavens, and there will be deep mourning among all the peoples of the earth. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:28-30 NLT

Vultures do gather. We recently went to Caw Caw Interpretive Center, a nature and historical park near Charleston, SC. There were about thirty turkey vultures roosting in the trees there above old rice plantation fields. Vultures were circling and looking for a mid-morning snack. We also saw a few vultures in a neighbor's yard, ironically feasting on an old turkey carcass. Who puts a Thanksgiving turkey out in their yard? At any rate, these ugly birds do gather together with their friends, and soar on air currents while looking for their next meal. Waiting.

We don’t know when Jesus will be coming back, but we do know when He left.
So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, "Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority; but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. Acts 1:6-9

With that…Jesus was gone from earth…gone from His beloved disciples and friends. Only the Heavenly Father knows when Jesus will return and bring restoration and peace—true peace—to Israel and the whole world. It is not for us to know when He will return—or really even to guess. People have made predictions for thousands of years as to the time of Christ’s return. Making fools of themselves. Jesus also told His disciples, and us, to be ready...For this reason you also must be ready; for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will. Matthew 24:44. The verses earlier in Matthew 24 tell us that there will be deep mourning. There will be deep anguish and then the Son of Man, Jesus Christ, will return on the clouds of heaven. Be ready—always. If you are ready, then you won’t be mourning—but you will be filled with joy. What do we need to do to be ready?

Prayer ~ Dear Jesus, Just as is written in Jeremiah… LORD, you are my strength and fortress, my refuge in the day of trouble! Nations from around the world will come to You and say, "Our ancestors left us a foolish heritage, for they worshiped worthless idols. Can people make their own gods? These are not real gods at all!" You said, "Now I will show them my power; now I will show them my might. At last they will know and understand that I am the LORD." Jeremiah 16:19-21. I do believe in You, Jesus, as my Messiah and Savior. Help those who know about You and don’t believe. Have mercy on them. Have mercy on us all.

Do You Mourn?

From The Sermon on the Mount...
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Mourning. Who of us hasn't experienced mourning—with the loss of a parent, spouse, sibling, child, friend...job...opportunity...home or car...hoped for dream dashed—leaving us devastated.

In the Old Testament comforting those who mourn can be found in Isaiah.
     - I have seen what they do, but I will heal them anyway! I will lead them. I will comfort those who mourn.... Isaiah 57:18
     - Shout for joy, O heavens! And rejoice, O earth! Break forth into joyful shouting, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people and will have compassion on His afflicted.  Isaiah 49:13 (NASB)
God is tough on His rebellious people—casting them out of the Promised Land into captivity in Babylon. But He is also compassionate—comforting them. Isaiah wrote to the people of Judah about their exile and then predicted the coming of the Messiah—Jesus Christ our Lord and King.

Tulips offer Hope.
The Lord has comforted His people.
Can we expect God to show us compassion if we are "afflicted" spiritually or physically—or even politically oppressed? If we are obedient to Him—then it is more likely He will be compassionate to His followers just as He promised in Isaiah 57 to comfort, heal, restore and lead His people—the righteous ones. As I try to be intentionally obedient to the Lord I am counting on His mercy and compassion. God comforts His people through His Word and through His people. Have you comforted anyone in God's family lately?

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank You for Your promise to comfort those who mourn—for  that is all of us—all mankind. It is part of our life—to live...and to die. May we die to self and may we be compassionate to those who mourn—God’s chosen people—Jews and Gentiles.
