What Voice Do You Follow?

Prayer – Lord, help me to clearly hear and recognize Your voice as You guide me down the path You would have me follow.

Sheep grazing in Israel.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
John 10:1-6 NKJV

Meditate. Read God’s word and listen.

Do you follow a voice? Is it the voice of our Lord…the Shepherd?

We all have a choice to listen. Either we do listen…or don’t. In this passage of scripture written by the apostle John we hear that the sheep listen to their shepherd. They won’t follow a stranger—only their own shepherd. We don’t have many sheep flocks around here to watch as examples…but we can Google and find that sheep do follow their shepherd because they have learned to recognize his voice and trust him. You probably recognize the voice of people throughout your life, like your parents and family members, school teachers, sports or news casters, entertainment celebrities, and particular preachers—like Billy Graham. Whose voice do you hear in your head as you make a decision? Your Mom or Dad…or maybe a grandparent? I sometimes hear advice my Mom gave me…and then scripture verses or phrases of passages, which I can look up in an on-line concordance.

We are likened to the sheep about which Jesus spoke. Is He your shepherd? Do you recognize His voice…His teaching…His guidance? Are you willingly following Him?

Verse of Salvation ~ Finally, believers, we ask and admonish you in the Lord Jesus, that you follow the instruction that you received from us about how you ought to walk and please God (just as you are actually doing) and that you excel even more and more [pursuing a life of purpose and living in a way that expresses gratitude to God for your salvation]. 1 Thessalonians 4:1 AMP
