A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem. Scripture posted on a wall at the
City of David.
Jerusalem
A psalm of David.
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to
the house of the LORD." And now here we are, standing inside your gates, O
Jerusalem. Jerusalem is a well-built city; its seamless walls cannot be
breached. All the tribes of Israel—the LORD's people—make their pilgrimage
here. They come to give thanks to the name of the LORD, as the law requires of
Israel. Here stand the thrones where judgment is given, the thrones of the
dynasty of David. Pray for peace in Jerusalem. May all who love this city
prosper. O Jerusalem, may there be peace within your walls and prosperity in your
palaces. For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, "May you have
peace." For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek what is
best for you, O Jerusalem. Psalm 122:1-9
Meditate. Imagine you are a pilgrim going to Jerusalem.
May all who love this city—of Jerusalem—prosper. When
David wrote this the Temple had not yet been built. David’s son, Solomon, would
build that Temple—an earthly home for the Lord God. A marvelous Temple that was
overlaid with pure gold. It was destroyed in about 586 BC by the Babylonians
who conquered Jerusalem. The Second Temple, though not as elaborate as the
First Temple, was built after the Babylonian captivity ended. King Herod modified and enhanced it and it was
still standing when Jesus was living. That Temple was destroyed the Romans in
70 AD. Jerusalem is a city loved by many people—and many religious groups:
Christians, Moslems, and Jews.David asked in Psalm 122 that people...

Since there is no longer a Temple, there isn’t a law that
requires Jews to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, like in the early days.
Each year every man
in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened
Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these
occasions, all men must appear before the LORD your God at the place he
chooses, but they must not appear before the LORD without a gift for him. Deuteronomy
16:16
It doesn’t matter where we worship the Lord...only that we
do worship Him in spirit and in truth. I was glad when they said to me,
"Let us go to the house of the LORD." There is no earthly home for Him…but many
houses of worship, large and small around the world. Where do you worship the
Lord? Celebrate with me. Rejoice! There have been 4,000 posts on this blog site,
Banquet With The King, to honor and worship the Lord God.
Verse of Salvation ~ In Jerusalem, the LORD of Heaven's
Armies will spread a wonderful feast for all the people of the world. It will
be a delicious banquet with clear, well-aged wine and choice meat. There he
will remove the cloud of gloom, the shadow of death that hangs over the earth.
He will swallow up death forever! The Sovereign LORD will wipe away all tears.
He will remove forever all insults and mockery against his land and people. The
LORD has spoken! In that day the people will proclaim, "This is our God!
We trusted in him, and he saved us! This is the LORD, in whom we trusted. Let
us rejoice in the salvation he brings!" Isaiah 25:6-9
Memory Verse of the Week ~ And now, dear brothers and
sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and
right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are
excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8
