My Help Comes from The Lord

Prayer – Lord, You are my helper, my protector, my savior. I rest in Your care because I know that You are always there for me. Please continue to reveal more of Yourself to me—that may share You and Your promises with others. I praise and adore You, not just during this Advent time—but always and forever.

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. The LORD himself watches over you! The LORD stands beside you as your protective shade. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night. The LORD keeps you from all harm and watches over your life. The LORD keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. Psalm 121:1-8

Meditate. Consider God’s protection.

I love this psalm! God is always watching and ready to help us. I like to hike and as I start up one of the nearby hills—called mountains although they don’t have any trees—I think about this verse. I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth! How could “help” come from a mountain—a pile of rocks and dirt and plants? Help comes in a powerful one—our God. As I hike I’m also reminded of God’s promise that… He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. I’m not as surefooted as I once was, so now this verse and God’s promise is especially precious to me. Falling can be scary. It happens so fast—yet it may seem like slow motion as you go from vertical to horizontal. No fun. Lots of people break bones or end up with a concussion from falling. Just in my backyard several years ago, I fell and scraped a tree as I went down. Didn’t hurt the tree, but I had to get a new lens in my glasses after that. Otherwise, I was OK. Good thing I had my glasses on! I think God had angels looking out for me that day, watching over my life, keeping me safe.

I look to the hills...
the hills of Jerusalem.
From where does my help come?
From the Lord God who made heaven and earth.

He is there to help them, too.

How tired do you get when you haven’t slept for a while? Consider that God never sleeps—not even naps. He is remarkable. No sleep. He is just always there by us. Protecting us from anything detrimental—even the harmful rays of sunshine. We go about our days—and the Lord just keeps watch over us. Safety First. He is the original Safety Officer, evaluating the situation before anything can cause us any distress, injury, or pain. If I were going up to Jerusalem as the Jewish pilgrims did on special required festivals, I’d be singing this psalm right along with them. Praise God—He is always standing beside us, protecting us, now and forever. My help comes from the Lord.

Verse of Salvation ~ I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free." Sing, O heavens, for the LORD has done this wondrous thing. Shout for joy, O depths of the earth! Break into song, O mountains and forests and every tree! For the LORD has redeemed (saved) Jacob and is glorified in Israel. Isaiah 44:22-23

Memory Verse of the Week ~ And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Philippians 4:8
