Do You Believe in Guardian Angels?

Daily Advent Lectionary Readings - Friday December 22
Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26
2 Samuel 6:12-19

Hebrews 1:5-14

For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus: "You are my Son. Today I have become your Father. God also said, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son." And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, "Let all of God's angels worship him." Regarding the angels, he says, "He sends his angels like the winds, his servants like flames of fire." But to the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. You rule with a scepter of justice. You love justice and hate evil. Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you, pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else." He also says to the Son, "In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundation of the earth and made the heavens with your hands. They will perish, but you remain forever. They will wear out like old clothing. You will fold them up like a cloak and discard them like old clothing. But you are always the same; you will live forever." And God never said to any of the angels, "Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet." Therefore, angels are only servants--spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.  Hebrews 1:5-14

Do you believe in guardian angels? That's a question you've probably previously heard. What do you think? Angels are known as messengers. In this passage in Hebrews the author tells us that angels are servants. God's servants. Servants to minister to Jesus and to those who believe in Him and have been forgiven of their sins--those who will have eternal life. With angels as servants we can be assured that they are guarding us.
As Advent draws to a close soon it is good to once again ponder the fact that God declared Jesus to be HIS Son--and that the angels worship Him. In Peter's book we read that Jesus is the guardian of our souls. Above angels--Jesus is our ultimate guardian.
   - Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls. 1 Peter 2:25
It is reassuring to know that angels were there to declare Jesus birth and His resurrection.

     - Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord's glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. Luke 2:9-10
  - Then the angel spoke to the women. "Don't be afraid!" he said. "I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He is risen from the dead, just as he said would happen. Come, see where his body was lying. Matthew 28:5-6

Old Olive Trees
Garden of Gethsemane - Israel

On the night He was betrayed in the Garden of Gethsemane Jesus told Peter about the angels that were available to Him upon request from His Father.
     - Don't you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? Matthew 26:53
Thousands of angels. Myriads of angels were created. That is a countless number. Like Jesus said... They are to protect.
     - For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.  Psalm 91:11
Here are a couple of more verses that tell us about angels who defend and protect.
     - For the angel of the LORD is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. Psalm 34:7
     - Beware that you don't look down on any of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels are always in the presence of my heavenly Father. Matthew 18:10
Angels are messengers and guardians. Like Jesus we can ask our Heavenly Father for them when we need  them. Believe...and be protected.

Prayer ~ Lord God, Thank you for the protecting angels that You have promised to provide for those who believe. You are awesome--King of King, Lord of Lords. May You be glorified--above angels.
