O LORD, listen to my cry; give me the
discerning mind you promised. Psalm 119:169
Discern, as described in the Encarta
Dictionary, means to see or notice something unclear, to understand something
or to distinguish between two or more things. It is to understand insights. That
takes wisdom.
How discerning are you? Can you distinguish
between two good things…and choose the one that is God’s will? Can you
determine if there is a spiritual battle occurring here and now over a
particular issue? Can you separate the chaff from the wheat…or the meat within
some simple story? Do you perceive God’s word being used…in an appropriate way
or in an unacceptable manner? Can discernment be taught? In Psalm
119, also known as the Wisdom Psalm, David asked God for discernment--a discerning mind.

Prayer
~ Lord, give me grace and a discerning heart that I would see people around me
as You see them. Provide me with a deeper understanding of You as I study Your
