So don't worry about these things, saying,
'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' These things
dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows
all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously,
and he will give you everything you need. So don't worry about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today. Matthew 6:31-34
Jesus was speaking to His followers as they
sat on a hillside above the Sea of Galilee.
He wasn’t talking to them about
salvation…about believing in Him…but about how to live a righteous life. He
pretty much goes back to the Ten Commandment and tells it like it is. Live
right—do what God the Father told Moses for the children of Israel. These are
listed in Exodus 20. The first four commandments deal with men’s relationship
to God. The other six commandments concern relationships between people.

Then
God gave the people all these instructions:
2 “I am the Lord your
God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery.
3 “You must not have any other god but me.
4 “You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of
anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. 5 You
must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your
God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods.
I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is
affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject
me. 6 But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those[b] who love me and obey my commands.
7 “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your
God. The Lord will
not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
8 “Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You
have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10 but
the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your
God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you,
your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any
foreigners living among you. 11 For
in six days the Lord made
the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day
he rested. That is why the Lord blessed
the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
12 “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full
life in the land the Lord your
God is giving you.
13 “You must not murder.
14 “You must not commit adultery.
15 “You must not steal.
16 “You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your
neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs
to your neighbor.”
I want to seek God
with all my heart, soul, mind and strength...as Jesus taught…You must love the LORD your God with all
your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. Matthew 22:37. So what does
seeking God mean? Above all else…seek Him first just as Jesus taught in the
Sermon on the Mount, Matthew chapters 5-7. Keep
the commandments and keep your life; despising them leads to death. Proverbs
19:16.
·
Honor God.
…Our
Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May
your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10
… Seek the Kingdom of God above all else. Matthew 6:33
·
Do not murder.
… You have heard that our
ancestors were told, 'You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are
subject to judgment.' But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are
subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being
brought before the court. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the
fires of hell. Matthew 5:21-22
·
Do not commit adultery.
…You have heard the commandment that says,
'You must not commit adultery.' But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman
with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew
5:27-28.
·
Do not steal.
… But when your eye is bad, your whole body
is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually
darkness, how deep that darkness is! Matthew 6:23
·
Do not falsely testify.
…You have also heard that our ancestors were
told, 'You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to
the LORD.' But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, 'By heaven!' because
heaven is God's throne. And do not say, 'By the earth!' because the earth is
his footstool. And do not say, 'By Jerusalem!' for Jerusalem is the city of the
great King. Do not even say, 'By my head!' for you can't turn one hair white or
black. Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Anything beyond this
is from the evil one. Matthew 5:33-37
·
Do not covet—that is
like judging other—wanting what they have.
…Do not judge others, and you will not be
judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in
judging is the standard by which you will be judged. Matthew 7:1-2 NLT
In His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus was
teaching about how to live righteously. Things haven’t changed—we still need to
follow His teachings. How are you doing with that?
Prayer
~ Dear Jesus—I understand that You said… Do not think that I came to abolish the Law
or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Matthew 5:17 NASB. Thank
you for your lessons in righteous living and for fulfilling Your promises.
