Here John is describing that it is the
Spirit that tells others about Jesus. In the preceding verses he talks about
the water and the blood. Jesus was baptized with water early in His ministry
and His blood was given up when He was crucified—it actually poured out of His
side when a Roman soldier pierced His side to see if He was dead. (See John
19:34.) The Holy Spirit is validating or verifying that Jesus is who He said He
was—The Christ, The Messiah, The Son of God. God…in the form of Father, Son or
Holy Spirit—cannot lie. In the same way
God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the
unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath in order that by tow
unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have
strong encouragement, we who have fled for refuge in laying hold of the hope
set before us. Hebrews 6:17-18. If it is impossible for God to lie…then He
is always telling the truth. Have you
noticed that since you became a Christian…or whenever you are filled to
overflowing with the Holy Spirit you just can’t tell even the slightest little
fib. No lying. Nadda. If you do tell an untruth—you correct yourself and apologize.
That is how strong the Holy Spirit is guiding you to be like Jesus—truthful.
Prayer
~ Holy Spirit—make me like Jesus. Truthful. And like You—bearing a strong
witness of Jesus—for He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one goes to the
Father, except by knowing Him.
