... teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. These older women must train the younger to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God. - Titus 2:3-5 NLT
Paul was speaking to Titus who he had left in Crete to help build up the churches there. Titus chapter one tells us that there were some problems with people talking and teaching things they shouldn't. That is probably why Paul was giving advice to just about everyone in the church--older men and women, young men and slaves. He was instructing them to live holy lives. There was that admonition again--to be submissive. The role of the Christian father/husband is to set the example for his family. So if the wife is "submissive"--not usurping her husband's role and authority then the family unit would be able to function as God designed. The older women themselves would have had to grasp that idea in order to "teach" it to the younger women. Since these were likely "new" Gentile Christians--this may have been a new concept even for the older women, although in that era women were considered second class citizens and servanthood and submission were part of their way of life. How do you see "submission" in today's society? Do you as a Christian "live to honor God?"
Training Tip – With your family discuss how each person has responsibilities in your home. Together make a list of responsibilities for each member of your family. Let everyone have input to these lists--so that they agree with them. At the end of the week hold a celebration to honor those fulfilling their responsibilities. Ask each person to encourage, remind and, if necessary help others. By doing our "jobs" around home we are living to honor God with our obedience to Him--and our willingness to serve each other in our home.
Lord Jesus and Father God, we live to honor and please You in all we do. May we never bring shame Your Word.
Happy Anniversary Joe & Debbie!
