Diligence

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve. Colossians 3:23-24

Work for The Lord--for Father God. That is just what Jesus did--He "worked" for His Father. He diligently did what His Father asked Him to do. That's just what we should do...serve the Lord as Paul wrote to the people in Colosse. And how are we to work? Heartily. Diligently. Willingly. Enthusiastically. Somehow working for The Lord rather than men has some appeal to some  people--but it is right there in this verse. The reward of eternal life is a great reward for which to strive. Remember though that eternal life is a gift from God--we cannot earn it or be rewarded it by our "works".

Training Tip – Do your children understand the meaning of "diligent"?  It is having or showing care and conscientiousness in one's work or duties. The synonyms: industrious, hard-working, assiduous, conscientious, particular, punctilious, meticulous, painstaking, rigorous, careful, thorough, sedulous, earnest.
Talk about what it means to work hard--to be diligent--and to not be diligent--which would be lazy.  Read this verse from Proverbs 10:4 (NET)  The one who is lazy becomes poor, but the one who works diligently becomes wealthy. Consider some ways that you have been an example of being diligent. Have your children shown signs of being hard workers? If so, praise them for that--and cultivate the characteristic of diligence.

Lord Jesus, You were diligent in Your obedience to Your Father. Help us to be hard working, too.
